Vista Verde Guest Ranch

$$$$ | 31100 County Rd. 64, Steamboat Springs, CO, 80428, USA Fodor's Choice
Vista Verde Guest Ranch, Steamboat Springs

On a working ranch, the luxurious Vista Verde provides city slickers with an authentic Western experience; lodge rooms are huge and beautifully appointed, with lace curtains, Western art, and lodgepole furniture, while the spacious cabins are more rustic, with pine paneling and old-fashioned wood-burning stoves, plus refrigerators, coffeemakers, and porches. They are well stocked with snacks and leave little to be desired in terms of amenities and creature comforts. Three-, five-, and seven-night packages are available. Two weeks a year you can participate in a cattle drive; there are also weeks for adults only.

The Broadmoor

$$$$ | 1 Lake Circle, CO, 80906, USA Fodor's Choice

Boasting old-world luxury and service, the signature pink-stucco buildings fill the manicured grounds at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, where a pristine lake, fine dining, and a luxurious spa offer one of the state's most pampering experiences. The cottages hark back to the days when wealthy Easterners gathered in the Adirondacks to enjoy an unhurried lifestyle. If you're going to stay in the South Towers, where the rooms vary in size from snug to immense—request one with a lake-view balcony. In summer, families enjoy paddleboats and gather around the large infinity pool, which appears to flow into Cheyenne Lake. At the on-site spa, try a Ginger Lime sugar scrub or the Poultice massage, a deep, heated muscle treatment dating back to the 14th century. The tennis and pickleball instructors are excellent, and the championship golf courses (which are not open to public play) are among Colorado's best.

Pros

  • Thoroughly pampering atmosphere
  • Many excellent dining options
  • Impressive art collection

Cons

  • Luxury comes at a price
  • Formal style might not be everyone's preference
  • Rooms (especially with a view) book quickly

The Crawford Hotel

$$$$ | 1701 Wynkoop St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

The lobby here—which guests can view from each floor—is the impressively renovated Union Station, a retro delight of desks with chain-pull lamps, long wooden benches, and constant bustle; the nostalgic sense of being on a train journey is carried elegantly into the 112 rooms, each of which offers a unique layout and design. The Pullman rooms on the train-track side are fully soundproofed and decorated with mahogany and train-themed art; other rooms might feature exposed beams, oversized windows for views of LoDo, or lofted ceilings. In-room iPads for easy navigation around the hotel and town, soft leather upholstery, and beige and white linens and accents are hallmarks of all rooms. With 12 bars and restaurants, there's something for everyone: Snooze and Pigtrain Coffee Company for breakfast; ACME Delicatessen or Wafels & Dinges for a fast lunch or quick dinner; modern American at Mercantile Dining and Provisions and ND streetBAR; fresh seafood at Stoic & Genuine; small plates at Ultreia; and Milkbox Ice Creamery for dessert. Devil's Thumb Ranch

$$$$ | 3530 County Rd. 83, Winter Park, CO, 80478, USA Fodor's Choice

Many visitors come to this 6,500-acre ranch outside Winter Park for unrivaled cross-country skiing, with 75 miles of groomed trails, but they wind up staying for the resort's comfort and privacy. Choose from a room or suite in the lodge built in 2008, the former lodge that's now a reasonably priced bunkhouse, or a cabin in the woods. The pet-friendly cabins range in size from 675 to 2,200 square feet, but all have wood-burning fireplaces and furnishings that reflect the resort's ranching history. In the loft cabins the beds are upstairs and bathrooms downstairs. In the lodge, upscale, Western-style rooms have some paneled walls (from lumber harvested at the ranch), pine furniture, and beds covered with colorful quilts. Some rooms have stone fireplaces. From tapping the power of geothermal springs to using trees cleared on the property to build part of the new lodge to the on-site Ranch House restaurant ($$$) that uses sustainable and organic ingredients, this resort lives green. Take in a yoga class at the full-service spa or work with cattle on a horseback ride, fly-fish, mountain-bike, and hike in the surrounding area. Hallowed Grounds coffee shop offers pastries and other quick breakfast items, and the rustic Heck's Tavern features three meals a day as well.

  • Top-notch restaurant
  • Gorgeous rooms and spacious cabins

Cons

  • In winter getting there can be rough

Copper Mountain Resort

$$$$ | 509 Copper Rd., Copper Mountain, CO, 80443, USA

Copper Mountain Resort manages the majority of lodging in the area, ranging from standard hotel rooms to spacious condos and townhomes. The Center Village is the heart of the action, as it's close to most of the shops and restaurants. Unlike Vail with its Tyrolean feel and Breckenridge with its mining-town roots, Copper Mountain Resort was built from scratch, and has a more modern and function-over-form feel, with concrete towers showing just a hint of alpine architecture. East Village is not as centrally located but provides easier access to the mountain's more challenging terrain.

Pros

  • Located near expert skiing terrain
  • Wide range of accommodations
  • Includes use of the Copper Mountain Spa and Athletic Club

Cons

  • Village can be noisy
  • Quality of rooms varies greatly
  • Novice skiers will have to trek to the West Village
