Foot of the Mountain Motel

$$$$ | 200 W. Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, CO, 80302, USA

Cute and no-frills, this mom-and-pop motel is adjacent to the Boulder Creek Path near the mouth of Boulder Canyon, far from Boulder's bustle yet a few minutes' walk from downtown. With its knotty-pine siding, red doors, and colorful flower boxes, this motel has a distinctive charm. The cabin-style rooms are simple but cozy (and quiet). Pets can stay, too.

Pros

  • Vintage property at the base of the mountain
  • Quiet neighborhood
  • Close to recreation

Cons

  • No-frills accommodations
  • No on-site restaurant
  • High price point for such casual lodging

Rabbit Ears Motel

$$ | 201 Lincoln Ave., Steamboat Springs, CO, 80477, USA

The playful, pink-neon bunny sign outside this motel has been a local landmark since 1952, making it an unofficial gateway to Steamboat Springs. The location is ideal if you're visiting the springs (across the street); the ski area (the bus stops outside); and downtown shops, bars, and restaurants. All rooms are standard motel style, although there's new carpeting and updated decor, along with EV charging stations. Most have balconies with views of the Yampa River, and there's a free shuttle to the slopes. Continental breakfast is included.

Pros

  • Great location
  • Family and pet friendly
  • Huge rooms

Cons

  • Can feel dated
  • Kitschy and nothing fancy
  • It can be noisy along the main drag
