Habita Hotel

$$$ | Av. Presidente Masaryk 201, 11560, Mexico

Its design strikes a harmonious balance between style statements and minimalism, but the location of this hotel, on one of the city's poshest avenues, is its main selling point. Service ranges from cool to indifferent, with a few exceptions, and some areas could use more upkeep. The swanky rooftop bar attracts international celebs and chic chilangos every night of the week thanks to its open-air views, fireplace, and selection of mezcals.

Pros

  • Beautiful pool
  • Great location
  • Panoramic views from the bar

Cons

  • Rooftop bar is noisy late into the night
  • Small, basic rooms

Haramara Retreat

$$$ | 63732, Mexico

With stunning views and acres of trees, as well as blissful breezes off the Pacific Ocean, Haramara Retreat is an oasis of tranquility just south of Sayulita. Originally a retreat for yoga groups, Haramara—which means "Grandmother Sea" in the Huichol language—is now open to individual travelers. With its own private beach and several large pergolas for meditation, Haramara is a wonderful venue for a rejuvenating vacation away from technology. Included in the price are three healthy meals daily at the ocean-view restaurant, which specializes in vegetarian cuisine but offers seafood as well. Expert bodyworkers give several types of massage, and private yoga lessons are available, as are surfing lessons and surf safaris. A packed dirt path leads up and down the hilly, 12-acre property to thatch-roofed bungalows that open to the sea breezes. The showers also are open-sided so you can admire the views as you bathe. Comfortable beds are surrounded by mosquito netting; hardwood floors, bamboo siding, and thatch roofs complete the Robinson Crusoe feel of the place.

Holiday Inn San Cristóbal Español

$$ | Calle 1 de Marzo 15, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico
A U.S. hotel chain may not leap to mind when looking for a place to stay in such a historic locale, but this Holiday Inn in an 18th-century hacienda that has served as a hotel for over a century has captured that San Cristóbal feel and combined it with reliable chain amenities. A mix of large and small rooms line rambling hallways and staircases (it’s a bit easy to get lost finding your way back to your room) while a central courtyard adds to the Colonial charm. Ask to see a couple of rooms since they are markedly different in layout although not so different in price.

Pros

  • Chain amenities without sameness of a chain hotel
  • Friendly, attentive staff

  • A few bathrooms could use new tiles
  • A few rooms have no windows

In the heart of downtown Mexico City, just behind the Catedral Metropolitana, this large hostel provides clean rooms at rock-bottom prices. Hotel & Spa Hacienda de Cortés

$$ | Plaza Kennedy 90, Cuernavaca, 62560, Mexico

Wandering around the gardens and discovering cascades, fountains, abandoned pillars, and sculptures in this 16th-century former sugar mill that once belonged to the famed conquistador makes for an enchanting experience, especially at dusk. Ask for a room in the old part of the building to fully immerse yourself in the flavor of the place. Rooms have traditional Mexican furnishings and lovely patios or balconies. Hotel Adhara Cancún

$ | Av. Náder 1, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Not only does the circular lobby of this hip, hacienda-style property have a martini bar but it's also decorated with illuminated onyx stone, marble floors, and teak furnishings accented with gray and cream cushions. Many of the rooms, which are done in neutral colors, are pleasantly decorated with Mexican wall prints and wrought-iron beds. All pool-facing rooms have balconies; fourth-floor executive rooms are larger, quieter, and have smart TVs, but they lack the pool view. The hotel's second Margaritas wing has a more casual feel than the main building.
