Hotel Riu Plaza Guadalajara

$$$ | Av. Adolfo López Mateos 830, Guadalajara, 44500, Mexico

One of the newest and trendiest hotels in the city, Hotel Riu enjoys a great location just 1½ km (1 mile) away from the Gran Plaza shopping mall and 3 km (2 miles) from Expo Guadalajara. It’s definitely one of the best business hotels in town, with Wi-Fi access throughout the property, 16 conference rooms, two restaurants, and a lounge-bar, swimming pool, spa, and fitness center.

Pros

  • Central
  • Great city views
  • Well maintained

Hotel Rosita

$$ | Paseo Díaz Ordaz 901, 48300, Mexico

What started as a sleepy 12-room hostelry—Puerto Vallarta's very first—is now a busy 115-room downtown hotel. It's still a viable budget option, mainly recommended for its location on the north end of the malecón close to restaurants and shops. Rooms are very basic; expect white-tile floors and fabrics with floral prints. Request a room facing the water, as much for the view as for the natural light; rooms facing the street are dark, making them feel cramped.

Pros

  • Swimming pool with ocean view
  • Old-fashioned value near downtown
  • Cheap Sunday brunch buffet

Cons

  • Older floors and furnishings
  • So-so beach
  • Spotty Wi-Fi

Hotel San Cristóbal

$$$$ | Carretera Federal #19, Todos Santos, Mexico

The location of Todos Santos' most popular hotel is quite extraordinary as you'll immediately be mesmerized by the sights and sounds of crashing waves; you can audibly hear them from your room. (Note: light sleepers may benefit from earplugs; otherwise, enjoy the soothing sound as it lulls you to sleep.) Every inch of the property is thoughtfully designed with a mix of colorful '70's motifs and classic beachy neutrals. The dining is among the best in Todos Santos; Sunday brunch at the farm–to–table restaurant, Cosecha, is the talk of the town.

Pros

  • The only beachfront hotel in town
  • Excellent dining
  • Fun, tasteful design

Cons

  • Out of touch with the local community, which has caused some controversy
  • Only accessible by a bumpy dirt road
  • Fewer pool loungers than guests

Hotel San Fernando La Condesa

$$ | Iztaccihuatl 54, Mexico City, 06100, Mexico

Part of the hip Austin, Texas–based Bunkhouse Hotel group, this casually chic boutique hotel set inside a 1940s apartment building is just a few steps from both Parque México and Avenida Amsterdam, and offers light-filled rooms with Bluetooth speakers, mini-refrigerators stocked with premium snacks for purchase, and a handful of suites with terraces. The complimentary breakfast is served on the hotel's lovely rooftop terrace, which is a nice spot to hang out any time of day, and there's a cute lounge on the ground floor serving coffee and cocktails, plus an assortment of tasty tapas, from shrimp ceviche to watermelon-feta salads.

Pros

  • Amazing location in Condesa's prettiest section
  • Great little lounge with good food and drink
  • Well-thought-out rooms with original architectural details

Cons

  • Street noise can be a problem, especially weekend evenings

Hotel Santa Fe

$$ | Calle del Morro s/n, at Blvd. Zicatela, Puerto Escondido, 71980, Mexico

An impressive archway leads you to the Hotel Santa Fe, a gracious grande dame consisting of clusters of colonial-style buildings in pastel shades surrounded by well-tended gardens, quiet courtyard patios, and gurgling stone fountains. A face-lift in 2014 added flat-screen TVs and a/c to all rooms. The restaurant ($$–$$$), well-known for its vegetarian food and award-winning Finca las Nieves organic coffee, is a top spot to sip a margarita, close a business deal, or watch the sun set. The location is prime: you're steps from Zicatela and Marinero beaches and a short stroll to the heart of the dining, surfing, and club scenes.

Pros

  • Excellent on-site restaurant
  • Pretty swimming pools
  • Intimate atmosphere

Cons

  • No beach facilities
  • Cramped reception desk

Hotel Santa Rita

$$$ | Av. Hidalgo 507, Zacatecas, 98000, Mexico

This shiny, modern hotel, with its prime location on Avenida Hidalgo, has taken the city by storm. A marble staircase leads up to the first floor, past gleaming glass structures. Rooms are top-of-the-line, simple and sleek, with dark-wood floors, lovely bathrooms, and, in some cases, terraces that open onto terrific views of the city. The restaurant isn't as exciting.

Pros

  • Good-looking hardwood floors in rooms
  • Nice contemporary art
  • Lots of privacy on balconies

Cons

  • Poor restaurant
  • Interior rooms have no window or a small window that does not open

Hotel Secreto

$$ | Sección Rocas, Isla Mujeres, 77400, Mexico

One of Isla's few luxury boutique hotels is intimate, contemporary, and notable for its long infinity pool and its guest rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies overlooking Half Moon Bay. The most affordable accommodations are on the ground floor; those on the top floor have better views, but the four-flight climb might be too much for some. The lobby bar mixes up phenomenal cocktails, and continental breakfasts are served poolside. The volcanic rock here isn't ideal for beach lovers, but Playa Norte is a five-minute walk away.

Pros

  • Pool overlooks ocean
  • Private and secure
  • Great fitness center

Cons

  • No elevator or restaurant
  • Rocky beach
  • Property could use renovation

Hotel Stella Maris

$ | C. James Sullivan 69, Mexico City, 06470, Mexico

This clean and comfortable hotel comes with all the expected amenities as well as a rooftop pool and terrace that offers an excellent view of the Reforma Avenue skyscraper district. A hip boutique hotel it is not, but it's not one of the questionable, cheap motels that dominated the area's lodging scene for decades. It's safe and well-situated to explore the San Rafael and Cuauhtémoc neighborhoods.

Pros

  • Great location for exploring
  • Awesome rooftop pool
  • Good on-site restaurant

Cons

  • Along a loud and busy main road
  • Not particularly unique or exciting in terms of design

Hotel Tabasco Río

$ | Calle 12 115, Río Lagartos, 97720, Mexico

Right on the plaza, this hotel has a bright center courtyard covered with skylights that allow light to shine on the tables where breakfast is served. The downside, however, is that all guest rooms face this atrium and noise carries all hours of the day. Although rooms are rather dated, they have comfy beds and a squeaky-clean paint job. Only a few rooms have balconies, but all have air-conditioning, fans, and cable TV; two rooms have kitchenettes for those who want to prepare their own meals. The water is only a few blocks away.

Pros

  • Well-appointed rooms
  • Hotel package can include meals and tours
  • Budget-friendly

Cons

  • Hot water can be inconsistent
  • Wi-Fi in common areas only

This is a reasonably priced, well-landscaped, bright white hotel at the south end of Playa Los Muertos. Suites have no separate living area but are larger than other rooms and have several different areas for sitting or playing cards, as well as a four-burner stove, blender, and fridge.

Pros

$$$ | Av. Madero Poniente 310, Morelia, 58000, Mexico

Built in 1565 for a Spanish nobleman, this downtown hotel radiates the aura of a bygone era. Guest rooms have dark colonial-style furnishings, lace curtains, soaring ceilings, creaking hardwood floors, and bathrooms with porcelain tubs. You can mingle with the locals at the popular sidewalk tables over a coffee, cocktail, or a meal. Make sure to get a room with a window facing outdoors, as some face only the lobby.
