Hotel La Casona

$$$ | Av. Durango 280, Mexico City, 06700, Mexico

This captivating hotel is an elegant, understated former mansion, registered as an artistic monument by Mexico's Institute of Fine Arts. From its small, sunny patios to its sitting room, the hotel's interior conveys the spirit of the Porfiriato. The owner loves classical music, and has added such whimsical touches as a trumpet turned into a lamp in one room and a portrait of Richard Strauss in another. The two-story hotel building, with its salmon-color facade, looks out onto a quiet tree-lined street.

Pros

  • No two rooms are alike, but all have hardwood floors, elegant furniture, and good-size bathtubs
  • Wi-Fi is free

Cons

  • Room decoration is a little tacky

Hotel Los Cocos

$ | Av. Héroes 134, Chetumal, 77700, Mexico

Large and modern by Chetumal's standards, Hotel Los Cocos has a pool framed by a pleasant garden (a boon on sweltering days) plus rooms—some with balconies or outdoor sitting areas—that are tidy, if not especially stylish. This is also one of the few area hotels that offers guests a gym and communal computers. The waterfront is within easy walking distance. Check the hotel website for discounts.

Pros

  • Strong water pressure
  • Good location
  • Free Wi-Fi in rooms

Hotel Marbella

$ | Calle Marbella 7, Manzanillo, 28869, Mexico

There's not much character in these blocks of basic motel-style rooms plunked down on the beach, but they're a good value, with cable TV, room service, and air-conditioning. The restaurant, El Marinero, as well as the buffet serve delicious Spanish, seafood, and Mexican fare. The hotel offers a variety of meal plans, or none at all. Ask to stay in the newer section (the cost is the same), where some standard rooms have ocean views and balconies. Marbella offers many Web-only specials.

Pros

  • Good food
  • Great prices

Cons

  • Nothing within walking distance
  • Water too dangerous for swimming
  • Exterior is run-down

Hotel María Cristina

$ | Río Lerma 31, Mexico City, 06500, Mexico

Impeccably maintained since it was built in 1937, this Spanish colonial–style gem is a Mexico City classic. The building surrounds a delightful garden courtyard—the backdrop for the hotel bar. Three apartment-style master suites come complete with hot tubs. In a quiet residential neighborhood near Parque Sullivan, the hotel is close to the Zona Rosa.

Pros

  • You get a lot for your money here
  • Good food at on-site restaurant
  • Classic colonial vibe

Hotel Marqués del Valle

$ | Portal de Clavería s/n, Oaxaca, 68000, Mexico

Taking up almost the entire northern edge of the zócalo, this hotel puts Oaxaca at your doorstep, all the while maintaining a polished and classy personality. Many rooms have views of the Palacio de Gobierno or the Catedral Metropolitana. If you splurge a bit, you can reserve a room with French doors leading out to a small balcony. Rooms are cozy, although not as atmospheric as at most other hotels in town. The open-air restaurant facing the main square has become extremely popular; you can grab a table right in the middle of life on the plaza.

  • Friendly staff
  • Clean and comfortable rooms

Hotel Mawimbi

$$ | Calle Igualdad s/n, Isla Holbox, 77310, Mexico

Made up of brightly painted beachside bungalows, this small hotel has rooms that are cozy, simple, and tastefully decorated, featuring pops of color that contrast with the white linens and the exposed wooden beams of the palapa-style roofs. Each bed is draped with mosquito netting, so you'll be safe from nighttime critters. A few rooms have kitchens, and the most expensive ones have ocean-view balconies. A small beachside, thatched-roof restaurant serves food that couldn't be fresher. Breakfast is included—expect local fruit, homemade bread, and fresh jams. In summer, ask the owners about their whale shark tours.

Pros

  • Decent rates
  • Suspended beach beds are great for relaxing
  • Restaurant food couldn't be fresher

Cons

  • Not all rooms have ocean views
  • Entryway rooms lack privacy
  • Cement floors aren't optimal

This might be the largest building in Mayto and arguably the hotel with the best amenities; the manicured gardens and gorgeous swimming pool offer a quiet and refreshing area for those not ready for the beach. Rooms are clean but nothing remarkable. A good restaurant, Wi-Fi, and camping facilities round out an already attractive proposal from this hotel.

Pros

Hotel NH Collection Mexico City Airport T2

$$ | Capitán Carlos León Gonzales s/n, Mexico City, 15620, Mexico

This sleek, circular three-story hotel is set directly above Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez Terminal 2 and is the most convenient lodging if you're flying on Aeroméxico or Delta (which are both based in this terminal), offering well-appointed accommodations with wood floors, premium bedding, and nicely updated bathrooms. Although rooms have large windows, they face an inner courtyard rather than planes taking off and landing. There's a full restaurant and bar serving decent if unmemorable international fare.

Pros

  • Very nice gym and outdoor pool
  • Thick windows keep out any noise from planes
  • Literally steps from Terminal 2

Cons

  • Need to take (free) airport shuttle to Terminal 1 or the Metro

Hotel Palmas de Cortez

$ | Calle 20 de Noviembre 2, Los Barriles, 23330, Mexico

Tried-and-true Palmas de Cortez remains the primary option in Los Barriles for travelers seeking central and comfortable beachfront accommodations. First and foremost, though, this is a fishing lodge. Pangas and several sizes of cruisers can be booked through the front desk and depart from the on-site dock, and special lodging and fishing packages are available with prices tiered according to room type and length of stay. Standard rooms are nothing to write home about due to dated decor, but the suites and condos are much nicer.

Pros

  • Most amenities in town
  • Multibed rooms can fit large families or groups
  • On-site fishing charters

Cons

  • Lack of local competition affects hospitality
  • Online booking isn't available
  • Pricey by Los Barriles standards

Hotel Palmeras

$$$ | Calle Lázaro Cárdenas 35, 63732, Mexico

A block from the beach, in an area with lots of good restaurants, "The Palms" has two floors of rooms surrounding a large, clean, rectangular pool. Guests can use the barbecue grill and eat or socialize at umbrella-shaded café tables or plastic loungers with cushions around the pool. Rooms and suites are either in the original, street-facing complex or the newer, ocean-facing building. They vary in configuration and price, but most rooms have a full kitchen; at the very least each has a three-quarter-size refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, and toaster. Some units have room for a family, with two separate sleeping quarters and kitchen, but no patio or private balcony. The two suites have ocean views and large, private patios.

Pros

  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Inexpensive older rooms
  • Newer rooms have patios and ocean view

Cons

  • Some rooms have odd layout
  • No parking

$$$ | Calzada Roberta 16, San Cristóbal de las Casas, 29229, Mexico

In San Cristóbal's oldest neighborhood, the adobe and stone building—with Spanish tiles dating from the 17th to the 19th century—that houses this hotel was originally a farm-and-wheat mill. The guest rooms are eclectically decorated with ornately framed mirrors, modern sculptures, oriental rugs, antique furniture, and Mexican colonial paintings.

Pros

Hotel Partana

$$$ | Carretera Tecate--Ensenada, Km 83, Valle de Guadalupe, 22750, Mexico

In the heart of Baja's wine country sits this modern 10-room boutique hotel within walking distance of Valle's top restaurants. Five sleek freestanding structures, reminiscent of upcycled containers, each house two suites with private entrances and rooftop terraces where you can sip a glass of wine while soaking in mountain-and-vineyard views. Wedding parties often book out all five units since the massive bathrooms with vanities (a rarity for Valle hotels) are perfect for brides preparing for their big day. Nespresso coffee pods, smart TVs, stocked minibars, and custom-made bath amenities are a few of the perks that set this property apart from the pack. Seamless comfort starts with the towels and bathrobes and ends at the king-size beds, perfectly firm with linens that have a ridiculously high thread count. Since this hotel is part of the Finca Altozano "compound," you can walk to several restaurants including Animalón, ¡Lupe!, and Gelateria Ramonetti while justifying that second (or third) pour with, "Since I'm not driving ..."

Pros

  • Rooms are built in between vines
  • Modern amenities and artisanal toiletries
  • Private accommodations each have a rooftop terrace

Cons

  • Not a full-service hotel
  • Loose gravel pathway to room
  • Patchy Wi-Fi

Hotel Posada de las Monjas

$ | Calle Canal 37, San Miguel de Allende, 37700, Mexico

Rooms in this basic, budget-priced, 19th-century inn are simply furnished in a colonial style; they're nothing fancy, but this is a good option for travelers on a budget. Several in the old wing are uncomfortably dark and cramped, but others are more open and have fireplaces. Head up to the rooftop public terrace for city views; the building is near the hulking dome of the Iglesia de la Concepción. There's a communal TV in the lobby, which looks like a formal Mexican living room.

Pros

$$ | Jardín de la Unión 12, Guanajuato, 36000, Mexico

This colonial-style inn at the Jardín de la Unión—the best location in town for being in the thick of things—has been in operation since 1862. Large historical paintings by local artist Don Manuel Leal hang in the wood-paneled lobby. Rooms are rather drab, with barely adequate bathrooms. Rooms facing the plaza can be noisy, but have the best views; quieter rooms face narrow alleyways, and some look onto Guanajuato's twisting roads. The hotel's restaurant is great for people-watching and late-night snacks.

Hotel Puerta Calakmul

$$ | Carretera 186, Km 98, 24640, Mexico

Just outside the entrance to Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul, this ecological retreat has gravel pathways that wind through the jungle to 15 private cabanas, each rustic in design with palapa roofs, tree stump nightstands, and parchment paper lampshades inlaid with leaves and bits of bark. Although there is no air-conditioning, ceiling fans, cement floors, and windowless walls (screens enclose each cabana) keep things surprisingly cool. There's a small pool and a decent restaurant that's open until 10 pm, but guests are mostly drawn to the property for its proximity to wildlife and neighboring ruins.
