Hotel Ta' Ċenċ

$$$ | Cenc St., Sannat, SNT 9049, Malta

Gozo's original five-star hotel continues to offer understated luxury and an exclusivity that's unique in Malta. Set atop one of the island's highest points, this high-class retreat has 1½ square miles of nature reserve for guests to explore. The low-rise buildings blend in with the topography and are surrounded by verdant native gardens and woodland. There are two pools on-site and a private rocky inlet a 10-minute drive away (by hotel shuttle bus) for swimming and snorkeling. It's also home to the Kantra restaurant, overlooking the waters of Mgarr ix-Xini. If traveling with children, book a room close to the family pool; couples should opt for rooms around the main pool.

Pros

  • Separate children/family pool keeps main pool a peaceful haven
  • Surrounding reserve ensures a feeling of being at one with nature
  • Excellent on-site spa

Cons

  • Not a hotel for party people
  • Few facilities for active guests
  • A little worn in places

Kempinski San Lawrenz

$$$ | Triq il-Rokon, Għarb, GRB 104, Malta

Gozo's largest hotel is its most international in style and feel, with the biggest pool, the best spa, and the most numerous on-site eateries on the island. There's certainly a reference to Gozitan style in the design, but this is a high-rise by island standards and the spacious rooms and suites are set around the capacious and verdant pool court. Sports facilities suit active guests and the large heated indoor pool (part of the 18,000 square foot spa) means it's a favorite during the cooler seasons.

Pros

  • Good range of activities
  • Excellent spa
  • Facilities for children

Cons

  • Waiter service is variable
  • Styling rather out of place with the rest of the island
  • Some feel the hotel too large for Gozo

Quaint Hotel

$ | Pjazza San Gwann Battista, Sannat, Malta

The Quaint is a local chain of family-run hotels across Malta and Gozo (there's another in Nadur). The no-fuss, large, modern rooms of the Xewkjia branch is a step up on many of the aging stays found across Gozo and a good price for what you get, with standing bathtubs, huge terraced balconies, and a central location. Reception is only manned part of the day, and an electronic keypad means you have easy access at any time. Balconies on the front side of the building overlook the Rotunda. The excellent downstairs restaurant, Giovanni's, is popular with locals and doubles as a breakfast room.

Pros

  • Large, modern rooms with standing bathtubs
  • Nice views from the terrace rooms
  • Great breakfasts on a terrace overlooking the town square

Cons

  • Xewkija is a not the liveliest of places
  • Reception is not manned after 5 pm (until noon on Sunday)
  • Rooms can be a little functional

San Andrea Hotel

$ | Xlendi Promenade, Sannat, XLN 1302, Malta

Occupying a corner plot on the beach at picturesque Xlendi Bay (one of Gozo's beautiful rocky coves), this family-run hotel is a favorite with divers and independent travelers. Built in traditional style with Gozitan sandstone, the rooms are compact but well-furnished and finished to a good standard. Zafiro, the on-site restaurant, has a waterfront terrace and serves breakfast (included in the room rate), lunch, and dinner. A selection of other bars and restaurants are within walking distance. Sea-view rooms offer the best value. One of the best dive schools on the island is only a few feet away on the harborside.

Pros

  • Helpful and attentive service
  • Powerful hair dryers
  • Great beach location

Cons

  • Rooms can be small
  • Ambient noise from neighboring waterfront bars and restaurants
  • Breakfasts can be hit and miss
