Jólagarðurinn

Located just south of Akureyri in a fairy-tale-inspired house decorated with giant candy canes and trimmed with faux frosting, Jólagarðurinn is not the place for grinches. The inside is packed to its pretty little rafters with an impressive display of Christmas goods, and the smell of burning embers mingles delightfully with those of peppermint, cinnamon, and smoked lamb. Icelandic Christmas music blends romantically with the tick-tock of Black Forest cuckoo clocks and the sound of wood crackling on an open hearth, fueling an atmosphere that should have your heart bursting with Yuletide joy, even in the middle of summer.

Be aware that it's only open on weekends and sporadically in the winter.

Spúútnik

Miðbær

Visiting a secondhand store in another country is always fun—it's a great way to see what the locals are (or were) wearing—and Spúútnik is no exception. This long-standing shop is funky, with a focus on clothing and accessories from the 1980s and '90s.

Svartar Bækur Fornbókabúð

Chock-full of dusty tomes, pulpy paperbacks, and who-knows-what-else, this used bookstore is a treasure trove of eccentricities. The name translates to \"Black Books,\" a nod to the British sitcom. The store is a prime locale for some souvenir shopping (and a chat with Stu and Ren, the charming couple who own it).

Established in 1901, Thorvaldsens Bazar has been selling lopapeysur and other wool products all knit by hand by local women. All items are tagged with the name of the knitter who produced it and all proceeds go to a charity benefiting children in need.

Alcohol is not widely sold in grocery stores in Iceland—you have to visit government-run liquor stores. They're usually open no later than 7 pm on weekends, and that's where the planning comes in. There are a number of locations around Reykjavík and throughout the country. Just be warned: alcohol in Iceland is not cheap.
