10GR Hotel & Wine Bar

$$ | Polidorou 16, Rhodes Town, 85100, Greece Fodor's Choice

This newish addition to the Old Town incorporates stone walls dating back 600 years; rooms come with large art deco--style murals, vintage furniture, clever lighting, and a cunningly concealed bathroom makes them seem larger and, despite their size, luxurious. This place has character in spades. Outside, each room has its own patio area, and downstairs, where breakfast is served in the morning, is perhaps the best wine bar in the city. A collection of 250 Greek wines run the gamut from pittance to pricey, making this a pleasant spot to while away the evening. It's open all year.

Pros

  • In a quiet part of town
  • A unique stay in Rhodes
  • Fantastic on-site wine bar

Cons

  • Rooms can feel chilly outside summer
  • Some may find the decor a bit kitsch
  • No vehicle access

Marco Polo Mansion

$$ | Aghiou Fanouriou 40–42, Rhodes Town, 85100, Greece Fodor's Choice

Entering this renovated 15th-century Ottoman mansion in the maze of the Old Town's colorful Turkish quarter is like stepping into another world to live like a pasha. Individually styled guest rooms come with furnishings often dating back hundreds of years; they're painted in deep-hued warm colors, with Oriental rugs and rare eastern antiques (including large beds draped with translucent canopies), while all surround lush gardens. Floors are rich tile and pitch-pine; embroidered cushions beckon from low sofas; and the scent of orange blossom fills the air. One room was actually a former harem, dating back to when this was under the ownership of a prominent Ottoman official. The clientele tends to be older here, and constant: a steady stream of Italian tourists return time and again, so book far in advance.

Pros

  • A quiet, historic retreat in the back alleys
  • Breakfast served in the garden
  • The courtyard restaurant is wonderful

Cons

  • Rooms are reached via several sets of stairs
  • Hotel can only be reached on foot
  • Modern amenities are largely missing

Spirit of the Knights

$$ | Alexandridou 14, Rhodes Town, 85100, Greece
Spirit of the Knights, Rhodes Town
Garden

A restored Ottoman house on the quiet back lanes of the Old Town is one of Rhodes's most distinctive getaways, with parts of it dating back six centuries. Fountains splash in a shady courtyard surrounded by a library, enormous rooms, and suites exquisitely decorated with a mix of antiques, latticework screens, kilims, and stylishly contemporary furnishings (the beds are supremely comfortable). History abounds in the walls of this boutique stay, with one of the larger suites accompanied by its own hammam, while another has been cleverly converted from an old chapel.

Pros

  • Lovely courtyard with Jacuzzi
  • Personal hammam should you wish
  • Massage and yoga sessions on request

Cons

  • Can only be reached on foot
  • No elevator or parking
  • Aging building has its downsides
