THE BEST HOTEL IN RHODES AND THE DODECANESE

Emporio

$$$$ | Nimborio, Yialos, 85600, Greece

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This elegant waterside villa, which sleeps up to 14 for exclusive usage, was taken over a few years ago by the people behind The Old Markets (carry on reading), and has been transformed into a modern spectacle that carries forward some of its past's most luxurious, sophisticated fixtures and fittings, like filigreed marble sinks and four-poster beds. Far from a home away from home, it offers a chance to live like royalty on Symi. It's a bit out of town, but that's the point. Private terraces and balconies afford solitude and fine views across the waters of Nimborio Bay, with day beds in the garden below.

Pros

  • The dining terrace boasts fine views over the bay
  • A range of private, bespoke services
  • 2 acres of gorgeous garden next to the sea

Cons

  • It’s a 30–45-minute walk to town
  • Lack of restaurants nearby
  • It all comes with a hefty price tag

Angelos Studios

$ | Agios Eleftherios, Psalidi, Greece

This unpretentious family-run collection of unfussy but comfortable self-catering rooms, a short walk from Psalidi's beach and its portfolio of restaurants and water sports, offers great value for money. Kos Town and its ferry port are within easy reach by bus, cab, or rented bike. There's a full-size pool surrounded by a grassy lawn.

Pros

  • Beach bars and water sports nearby
  • Full-size pool
  • On-site parking

Cons

  • No bar or restaurant
  • Everything is very much budget
  • Slightly scruffy rural surroundings

Asymi Residences

$$ | Beachfront, Pedi Bay, 85600, Greece

In this rather colorful arrangement of apartments, which lies a couple of hundred meters back from the waterfront as you enter Pedi, rooms are all wooden floors, white walls, and green-painted beams, making it all rather folksy-meets-Laura Ashley. Views look over the water, with balconies to sit out on as the sun dips. The bar and terrace makes a peaceful spot for an aperitivo. The quiet harbor of Pedi Bay is just a short walk away, while Agios Nikolaos beach is a longer, more strenuous hike.

Pros

  • Peaceful nearby waterfront
  • Charming ambience
  • Sunsets over the water are magical

Cons

  • No swimming pool
  • Noisy roosters nearby
  • Its neighboring yards are a bit scruffy

Niriides

$$ | Nimborio, Yialos, 85600, Greece

A small fishing village, about a mile from Yialos, is the setting for a get-away-from-it-all retreat in pleasant, colorful apartments surrounded by gardens. Rooms with lounges, kitchenettes, and balconies surround a newly refurbished communal terrace where drinks and meals are served as chillout music plays on repeat. Nearby is the only restaurant in the village, a pleasant taverna that serves at tables right on the beach. Minibuses head to Yialos every couple of hours for guests.

Pros

  • Stunning terrace
  • Great hospitality
  • Beautiful rural location

Cons

  • Room decor is quite clinical
  • Far from major sights of Symi
  • Bar-terrace can be a bit noisy

Opera House

$$ | Aigialos, Yialos, 85600, Greece

An expatriate Symiot returned from Sydney (hence the Australian-inspired name) in the 1970s to convert the family property into a cutely colorful village-style complex of rooms and self-catering family suites. The architecture is faithful to local style, but facilities are up-to-the-minute—including a new roofed pool that opens out into its beautiful courtyard garden.

Pros

  • Friendly and super-helpful staff
  • Peaceful location
  • Spacious rooms with all mod cons

Cons

  • No elevators
  • Unimaginative buffet breakfast
  • The rooms could do with a refurb
