Maui -- Seven Sacred Pools Closed
Read that Maui County closed a damaged bridge just south of Hana on Maui. That means you can't get to the Seven Sacred Pools in Kipahulu, camp in Kipahulu, or hike the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls. Total bummer. Here's blog post that covers it. http://hawaiirama.com/2006/10/earthq...e-road-to-hana.

The road from Kahikinui to Kipahulu is closed to all but local traffic for now while they (FEMA) inspect it.

I just came from dinner with some family. We discussed FEMA closing Pi`ilani from Kipahulu and wondered if those FEMA malihini know that the road has always looked like that (single lane, steep drop-offs, rough, unpaved and partially paved)?
That bad Gyppie. What did she do to get herself banned? Auwe!

Here's the latest on the closure, including maps, from today's Honolulu Advertiser:

Aloha!
Drove to Hana yesterday (11 Nov '06) not knowing the bridge was out. It would have been nice if there was a sign posted 50 miles earlier at Kahului...
Anyway, the sign at the bridge advises that:
1. the bridge is closed due to earthquake damage.
2. the park is closed; no park, no pools, no hiking trails, no nothing
3. don't even walk across the bridge; there is nowhere to go.
4. access from the other side is closed while they inspect several other bridges
5. even if you could get in from the other side, the park is closed etc etc
The good news is that the traffic on the Hana road was very light.
