Maui -- Seven Sacred Pools Closed

Read that Maui County closed a damaged bridge just south of Hana on Maui. That means you can't get to the Seven Sacred Pools in Kipahulu, camp in Kipahulu, or hike the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls. Total bummer. Here's blog post that covers it. http://hawaiirama.com/2006/10/earthq...e-road-to-hana.

Are those sites closed off or inaccessible coming north up highway 31? The road runs in both directions.

Bummer, but thanks for making us aware of this. Lex1, the way I read the article is you can't get there or hike the Pipiwai Trail.

You could always go around the other way!

I like the other way around - through the arid upcountry with its vineyards and ranches - better any way. Some folks will now see a part of Maui they never would have!

To those of you who go this route, do stop in Makawao too!

sylvia,
The article in the blog mentions that the road around Kaupo was closed last week due bridges being closed, so you can't go the other way either.

I'm reading the article the same way iamq is. You can't get there from either direction.

However, tomorrow I will email my friend who is in Hana right now and try to report the facts.

The road from Kahikinui to Kipahulu is closed to all but local traffic for now while they (FEMA) inspect it.

You're gyppie??? I knew you sounded very familiar, but I somehow never got the 'lou' connection!! All this banning and name changing is so confusing! #-o

I just came from dinner with some family. We discussed FEMA closing Pi`ilani from Kipahulu and wondered if those FEMA malihini know that the road has always looked like that (single lane, steep drop-offs, rough, unpaved and partially paved)?

That bad Gyppie. What did she do to get herself banned? Auwe!

gyppie...who?

I'2,
I betcha they'll have something jury-rigged by the time I go in February and you go in March. Weren't you going to fly in on your private plane anyhow?

bbq, depends on where Uncle Willie is. If he's playing down at the store, then he will probably send the plane for me. But, if he is off getting busted again, then, who knows how we will get there.

Here's the latest on the closure, including maps, from today's Honolulu Advertiser:

Aloha!

Drove to Hana yesterday (11 Nov '06) not knowing the bridge was out. It would have been nice if there was a sign posted 50 miles earlier at Kahului...

Anyway, the sign at the bridge advises that:

1. the bridge is closed due to earthquake damage.
2. the park is closed; no park, no pools, no hiking trails, no nothing
3. don't even walk across the bridge; there is nowhere to go.
4. access from the other side is closed while they inspect several other bridges
5. even if you could get in from the other side, the park is closed etc etc

The good news is that the traffic on the Hana road was very light.

BTW- They are not sacred pools, have never been sacred to Hawaiians. And there are more than seven. The name just sounded romantic and brought in tourists.
