Stay at Yosemite Lodge, if you are worrying about the money, & you are, this is the logical choice & a fine choice. It's a nice, clean motel w/ a fab view & great conveniences. Like others have said, go to the Ahwahnee for dinner, it's worth the experience & the food is good.

don,
Given what you said earlier about your disappointment with the El Tovar (and we have stayed there), I don't think you'll be any happier about spending $365 a night at the Ahwahnee.

Although I don't mind paying for nice hotels, I really felt ripped-off at the Ahwahnee. The Ahwahnee is not a luxury hotel by any standard - mediocre rooms, bathrooms, service, main dining room is high point, but other eating is limited and not great. The Ahwahnee commands a high price because of its great location - and because it's the only show in town. (Lodge, motel-style with huge, kids galore pool, is actually much better value because of its similarly great location and comparable rooms; but it does not make any attempt to be a "luxury" hotel.) Frankly, I would stay at the hotel just outside the west entrance to the park (think it starts with a T?), which looks extremely nice. Although it's not on the floor of Yosemite, it's very near the giant sequoias. Unlike the Ahwahnee, Yosemite is about as nice as it gets.

X above is referring to the Tanaya Lodge in Fish Camp which is near the south entrance. We have stayed there many times and it is a nice place. We've also stayed at the Yosemite Lodge as I was surprised at how well taken care of this place was considering it is fully booked for most of the year. The last time I stayed there was in Sept after the really busy season and I still thought it was a well-kept room.

My sibs and I sent our parents to the Ahwahnee for an anniversary a few years ago and they enjoyed their stay. Though they didn't pay they did know the prices and felt that the cost of the room was outrageaous. But there is location, location, locaation.
