Yakima WA to Manzanita, OR

Looking for a suggestion of a place to stay for one night between Yakima and Manzanita. We really don't like one night stays, but also like to meander along rather than driving straight through so think we should add a stop between these places.

Also wondering if the Washington side of the Gorge is scenic. Have been on the Oregon side previously and stopped at many of the falls.

It is less than 5 hours between the two places, so very easily doable even meandering.

That said, yes, the WA side of the gorge is nice. You won't find all the waterfalls as you do on the OR side, but there are some highlights of their own. As you come out of the Satus Pass, just pass Goldendale on into Maryhill, there is a Stonehenge replica. Then there is Maryhill Winery as well as the Maryhill Museum. Then Horsethief Butte is pretty cool. A few other smaller places along hwy 14, but those are the biggies.

If you decide to stop partway for an overnight, I would do it in the gorge. Either the OR or WA side. Lots and lots of options.

The Washington side of the Columbia is highly scenic all the way to Washougal--expansive views of the river and Mt. Hood.

We much prefer WA 14 to the OR interstate, except for the waterfalls.

The drive is 280 miles. If we were going to break up this trip (which we wouldn't) we would stay at the Best Western in Hood River with a balcony on the river. Other possibilities include McMenamin's Edgefield in Troutdale and Portland.

Since we plan to taste Washington wines on this trip, wonder if a detour to McMinnville, OR would make sense to try some Oregon wine, too. Any thoughts on this.

I'm glad to hear that WA 14 is scenic because we would prefer that to the interstate.

If you like wine, then yes, definitely make a detour! I live right in this area and we have over 200 wineries in this region alone. Our pinot noir is world class!

If you need suggestions, just ask.

Don't miss the Maryhill Museum close to the US 97/WA 14 junction. It's a very interesting and eclectic place. http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/2013/

We also like the BW Hood River Inn, but also like McMenamin's Edgefield too. Edgefield has its own vineyards and winery, also a brewery, distillery, numerous on-site pubs and restaurants, a pitch and putt golf course, lovely gardens, a movie theater, funky art throughout and a spa. No TVs in the rooms, however. http://www.mcmenamins.com/54-edgefield-home
