Would you go to Grand Canyon in January?
We will be in Vegas for new year's eve and would like to spend 3-4 nights to see some of the surrounding area. We have a car and are thinking about Grand Canyon. What do you think? Where is a nice place to stay if we go?
Any other suggestions?
Thank you.

Watch the weather carefully and go if there hasn't been a storm the past few days and none are forecast. It's tough driving in a rental with no snow tires if it does happen to snow and ice up. A few times each winter it snows so much that I-40 shuts down, but most of the time it's clear (cold but sunny).
So don't make reservations far in advance, you want to be flexible.

We hiked to the bottom in late January. Descending into the snow covered canyon was a memorable experience.
During our stay at the bottom fresh snow fell at the rim and we had to hike through two feet of new powder when we were very tired.

Go to the National Park website to read about Grand Canyon. You need to book in-park accomodations as they will fill up even in January.
Remember the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is at about 7,000 ft elevation. That means it freezes at night and there is a reasonable chance of snow on the roads. Bring warm clothing.
Another option would be a trip to Death Valley National Park.

Thank you all. We decided to go and stay in El Tovar but we don't want to drive now in case we have bad weather. We are trying to think of a way to get there and found out hat we can go on a plane through a tour company for $230 per person. We are willing to pay that if this the best way to do it.
Would this be a good way to do this?
Would we see as much on these planes as helicopters?
Please help.
Thank you.
