We are going to be driving through Wisconsin at the end of Sept. Are there any areas good for fall color? Does anyone have a B&B recommendations? We are interested in going on some short trails.

There is beautiful fall color throughout the state. When the color peaks in each loaction varies, depending on the weather.

What is your route through the state? There are lots of B&Bs--if you narrow down the location, I might be able to help.

You didn't mention the area where you are going but we have stayed at the "Old Rittenhouse Inn" in Bayfield a few times and we enjoyed it a lot. This is not a small B&B and it has a full restaurant but it is nice and the restaurant is wonderful!!

In order to see decent colors in WI at the end of September you are going to have to be North of Wausau, better would be North of Hwy. 8. I guess it depends on where you are coming from and where you are going.

We have already been to DOOR county. We wanted to know of other areas of Wisconsin which are good for fall colors. Our schedule is flexible. We can either travel end of Sept. or in Oct. We wanted to relax and take some short walks.

Since you mention October....

If you can go around 10/15 or so, I have 2 thoughts: A day at Horicon Marsh which is between Beaver Dam and West Bend is great! It is a stopping over point for migrating waterfowl and if the time is right you will see be around 100K plus geese plus lots of ducks. Great small hiking areas and excellent color. From there I would proceed South to the Kettle Moraine State Forest area just North of Whitewater. On the way you could pick up some fresh apples, pumpkins, etc. Also great colors and hikes to please all tastes. Want more? Head West toward Prarie du Chien and drive the Great River road toward LaCrosse and or Winona MN. Outstanding bluffs and if you hit it right the colors are unbeatable, Scenic overlooks of the Mississippi, etc. (you could make the whole trip out of this region if time is limited).

I am not a B&B guy so I can't help you much with that part of your question.

If you want to go the beginning of October, Stone Lake has their Cranberry Festival October 4-5 and further north Bayfield has their Apple Festival that same weekend. Lots of B&B's in the area. Do a general search for Stone Lake or Bayfield. Also try Washburn County. Stone Lake is just north of Hayward. Great fall colors! Nice small town shops, antiques, etc. Good luck planning.

All of Wisconsin has spectacular Autumn color. Try the Menominee Indian Reservation and then north to Langlade County. Bear Paw Inn or Wolf River Lodge at Langlade. Check the newspaper sites, many will post information about colors.

I can also suggest western Wisconsin esp. the Prarie du Chien and Lacrosse areas. Vistas from the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi river are fantastic any time but particularly in fall colors.

I'll second the recommendations for the Prairie du Chien/LaCrosse area in western Wisconsin along the Great River Road. We've seen great fall foliage up there around Columbus Day weekend. Here's a website that may help: www.bedandbreakfast.com

I would vote for the Bayfield area, LaCrosse, or the Chain of Lakes areas of Eagle River or Minoqua for beautiful fall views. For hiking, try the state parks for miles of trails (Wyalusing, Perrot, Devil's Lake...). You can get fall color reports online also. Try www.travelwisconsin.com.

www.travelwisconsin.com was a really good site. I ordered the bed and breakfast guide and also the travel information relating to seeing the fall colors. Both were really excellent.

We decided to stay at Victorian Treasure Inn since we wanted to go to Devil's Lake and Baraboo.

Given that we shifted our travel dates to mid-Oct., we decided to go to the lower half of Wisconsin.

We also decided to stay in Dubuque for one night and do part of the Great River Road scenic drive.
