Due to a death in the family, I am flying to Wichita tomorrow. My sister and I need a recommendation for a hotel...because of fodors, I have become a travel snob - but the problem is, I am a cheap travel snob. My sister insists that the La Quinta will be just fine, but it is going to be a tough couple of days and I would like a decent place to stay.

Any ideas?

Use priceline--you can choose which star rating you'd like in what location, and on that short notice in Wichita you're likely to get a great deal on a great hotel...I know someone who stayed at the Doubletree there for $11 (that was a few years ago).

Don't know if you've been to Wichita before, but it's a pretty blue collar place. It doesn't have any luxury or near-luxury hotels. Priceline doesn't list anything higher than 3 stars (which, to me, is Holiday Inn territory). I haven't been there in awhile but checked trip-advisor and the airport Hilton is rated best (very few votes though) which gives you some idea. There's a Hyatt. There's also a very middle of the road Marriott.
Any of those will likely give you a very predictable but unexciting place to settle. Sorry for your unfortunate circumstances.

I was actually born and raised in Wichita, so I familiar with it's charms!

My 78 year old grandfather died, so it was expected, but sad. Thank you for your thoughts.

Take a look at the Hotel At Old Town by Candlewood. The property was originally a turn of the century warehouse. Very cool looking lobby. I haven't stayed there but popped in to use the ladies room when visiting Old Town.

I stayed at the Hotel at Old Town a few years ago and loved it. It's a lovely place--large rooms and nice amenities. It was the first night of our honeymoon (stayed there before flying out of Wichita airport) and our room even had a private hot tub. That might be nice for you to relax in. Thanks again for everyone's replies. The Old Town hotel did look great, but pretty expensive for Wichita $160 per night. (Remember, I said I am a cheap travel snob.) So I did Priceline for the first time ever and got $25 a night at a Holiday Inn Select 9 minutes from my grandma's house. I have decided to consider this a success. The pictures on their website look lovely and I am SURE they wouldn't exaggerate.
