White Mts. N.H.

My family (we have 2 children 6 & 9) are going to Bar Harbor Maine for 3 days and traveling to N.H. Would like to stay around the White Mountains. We are looking for a place to stay for 3 nights, something with a pool, ok for children and not to much $$ about $100. maybe even a view of the mtns. Also any good places to eat. Thanks alot for any info.

Hi-
I would suggest looking into the North Conway area. There are lots of family friendly places to stay. Also fun stuff for you and your family to enjoy: hiking, Storyland (a small theme park), Attitash Alpine Slide, outlet shopping mini-golf etc. Cant' comment specifically on hotels as I grew up fairly close to the area and never stayed in a hotel. A good website to look at would be:
http://www.mountwashingtonvalley.com/
It has a pretty comprehensive list of lodging thats available in the area.
Good luck!

There is a very nice hotel White Mountain Hotel in North Conway but not in town. With AAA discount we pay around $75 but we always go there off season. During a summer and skiing season it is more expensive but it is a wonderful place to stay next to the Cathedral Ledge and with a great view of the White Mountains. And there is an outdoor swimming pool which is open all year. Another interesting place is Mount Washington Hotel or if you are a hiker there is Pinkham Notch Lodge that is very basic with share bathrooms and good food. There are so many places to stay that it is hard to recommend specific one. Check the website that Betsy recommended and then make your own choice. Good luck and have a great time. It is a beautiful place to visit.
There was one place to eat nice meals in nearby Fryeburgh but I can't recall name.

The Mt. Washington Hotel will run you about $400/night for room, activities and meals (not lunch). Expensive but very nice. You can stay at the Bretton Woods Motor Inn or the country inn that are on the grounds of Mt. Washington and use its facilities for around $120/night.

Another nice spot is the Nordic Village in Jackson, NH (right near Story Land). Studios start around $100 and go up from there. Beautiful grounds, nice pools (indoor and outdoor), small pond for rowing a boat around and sing alongs around a fire at night. Very nice.

Friends have stayed at the White Mountain and enjoyed it tremendously. Don't know the rates.

Story Land is a lot of fun for young children. Your nine yr old shouldn't be too old for it. The park is geared toward younger kids but has enough semi-scary rides for the 9 year to be happy.

I would not recommend staying in North Conway. Traffic can be unbearable. The areas of Jackson,Attitash and Bretton Woods are all in the White Mountains but removed from the traffic. STill plenty to do without hitting N.Conway

May I recommend the "other side" of the White Mountains - the Franconia Notch area. We always had wonderful family vacations in this area staying at the Woodwards Motel in Lincoln NH. Not sure what the rates are now but it was not too expensive a few years ago. Also in the area is the Indian Head Resort - both have motel type rooms and pools . A friend once stayed in a little cottage at Woodwards - they had 3 children and liked it a lot. Franconia Notch has wonderful scenery with views of the Old Man in the Mountain and Echo Lake, you can visit the Flume which is a beautiful gorge, find Lost River which is another great place to take kids, or take the gondola ride to the top of Cannon Mountain. Be sure and travel on the Kangamungus Highway which is the east west road between North Conway and Lincoln NH and stop along the way at some of the viewpoints to visit the waterfalls and explor the river. It's truly a beautiful place to visit with a different flavor than Bar Harbor/Acadia Park which is also one of my favorite New England areas.

You're going to have a great time.
Enjoy

We just booked the North Conway Grand for the end of June at $99 per night. Stayed there last year and enjoyed it very much. Children will get a free breakfast coupon. It is also located right next door to great outlet shopping.

Check out this website for lots of info. on N. Conway: www.4seasonresort.com

Woodwards is an excellent recommendation, and it's still very reasonable.

The Lodge just nort of No Conway is a great family hotel. Pool, in room fridge, sliders to grounds by river, close to all the attractions in Glen. Very clean and convenient.

I love North Conway but would never stay in a hotel around there because the traffic is awful. The other side of the Kancamangus Highway has several areas that are really nice with fewer crowds. I personally like the North Woodstock area, and recently found a cabin at (believe it or not) Country Bumpkins Cottages & Cabins. The cottages are all impeccably re-done in a rustic style, are on the Pemi River, and some have cooking available. You're also less than a mile to Clark's Trading Post, and Franconia Notch is about 3 miles north. The people who run the place were fantastic. They also had a little playground, and a fun barn with activities (in season) for kids. I think they have a website.
