Which resorts on the Kohala Coast on the Big Island are open?
Just found out the Kona Village Resort is closed. Does anyone know which other resorts on Kohala Coast are open/closed? Many thanks.

I think most of them are open... I love the Orchid...great service, very friendy staff, nice beach and pool area. The Four Seasons is hard to beat but you must pay...other options are the Mauna Lani, Mauna Kea, Waikoloa Resort... My kids loved the Waikoloa (tram and water boat options to get you to your room plus saltwater pools with turtles and other marine life). I found the large scale of the resort tiring...I felt like i was either waiting or walking. The Mauna Kea is a classic....a great beach and understated facilities but not for first choice for kids.

Oops...how embarassing...I live in Hawaii (Oahu) and was nto aware of the damage to the Kohala Coast hotels. I read about Kona having damage but it never occurred to em to think about the hotels up North. So, I apologize---I thought you were just ramdomly asking about other resort options. I do not know what resorts are open or not. I bet Mauna Kea is open as their pool is up high away from ocean as is the hotel itself.

So far we have not heard of any closures except the Four Seasons. It will open again fairly soon, I think. We have been following the news on West Hawaii Today's web site, plus word of mouth around town, mostly from restaurant staff.

The Kona Village has cancelled all reservations and it looks as if it will closed for at some least months. On the other thread a cancelled customer said they would not even talk about taking reservations as far out as June. More damage that they they thought.
wbpiii, how did you hear about the Mauna Kea being open?

They will call the other the resorts. I wanted to get them as much advance informationn as possible before that takes place. They need to talk to KVR first. It is possible that KVR will try to arrange accomodations for them and I wanted them to have the skinny on certain places that they prefer over the others. Both hotels Hapuna and Mauna Kea would probably be ok for them, but they were looking forward to the KVR "all inclusive" hale experience. Thanks.
At least the disaster didn't happen while they were there.

Hi! We're going to the Mauna Kea in about a week, looking forward very much to that! We were there before 2006, and stayed at Mauna Lani in the interim. Were so glad that it's not closed again for this trip. It's by far my favorite in this area- very serene, architechture is stunning. Even though it is not your friends first choice, they are going to LOVE IT!!!
Thanks for your post on my Big Sur dilemma...

The beach there is wonderful. Absolutely gorgeous. One of our favorite dinners on the island was their seafood buffet. Sitting under the stars, at the waters edge, great food in beautiful tropical location = can't be beat.
puff, if you are going to be there over a weekend be sure to go to their clambake.

Mauna Kea is close to the beautiful and lush Hawi/Kapa'au and Pololu areas. There are lots of great restaurants and activities up there, as well as interesting and beautiful historically significant areas.
I have friends that are devoted to Kona Village too, but I think it's nice to explore the gorgeous areas of North Kohala, Waimea, and Honomakau.
If people are on the Big Island on a Saturday near a full moon, the Talk Story at Mauna Lani is free and really magical, with excellent musicians and dancers. (Call the concierge to verify the date.)
The Waikoloa Kings and Queen's Shops also have daily free entertainment, including some top Big Island musicians, and terrific local hula halaus, including keiki hula (kids) which is adorable!

Why not just visit the websites or call the ones you are interested in to find out what is going on. Have stayed at the Fairmont Orchid and loved it. Hopefully will return there next Feb for 30th Anniversary. Great hotel and Brown's was a really good restaurant right on the grounds.
