Which North Carolina beach?
We are a family of four - mom, dad and two teenage girls - looking for nice beach vacation in North Carolina. I've researched but am having a hard time in distinguishing between the areas - Outer Banks, Emerald Isle, etc.
We are looking for an oceanfront resort with an outdoor pool and close to restaurants, and shopping. We would like to be in an area with beautiful beaches and access to fishing, golfing and kayaking.
We would prefer a place to stay that has a kitchen. We've looked into renting a house but we can't stay an entire week so a hotel/condo resort seems like it would work better.
Also we are driving from Mass so beaches further north that would save a bit of driving would be preferred though we wouldn't rule out more southern areas.
Any suggestions?

Without a doubt, first choice would be Wrightsville Beach. Fabulous beach and area, lots to do but not too touristy. Historic wilmington right next door.

Most of the beaches are beautiful in NC but many are somewhat removed from restaurants and shopping. Depends on what you're looking for.
N. Topsail's beaches are lovely but remote, with very little nearby, and what is nearby is a good 25 minute drive.
Atlantic Beach has a few more offerings in terms of shoppes and restaurants in addition to the oceanfront lodging.
