Why would one think GOogs means american history? I don't think for a 5 yr old that would be very interesting at all.
Except for the comment about the food, it seemed to me the cafeteria in the Natural History museum was pretty good, better than average.
I wouldn't have thought of the Postal or Indian museum, but I could see how they could work, also. Maybe, not sure about the INdian, I was a little disappointed in that one myself, I think it also is too much reading.

Not to mention, it said "National" History, which certainly would lead one to believe he/she was referring to American History, but could have just been a typo and they meant "Natural" rather than "National". Chistina, why are you always picking a fight?

The Postal Museum would be ideal for the 5 year old and it does not take long to go through. However, it is over by Union Station.
Sanibella's idea for the Museum of Natural History sounds good. You may also want to pop in next door to the Museum of American History to see The Star Spangled Banner. I think that would be impressive to both of your children.
The Newsmuseum is very nice but some of the displays and photos can be a bit gorry/overwhelming. Remember it is about news.
If the weather is nice I suggest grabbing to-go food and grab a bench on the mall. This would give your boys a chance to run around outside. Paul on Penn Ave behind the National Archives has great sandwiches, etc.

Despite Christina's contrary opinion, children can and do enjoy the National Museum of American History. My nephew at age 5 loved the "America at War" exhibit and my niece loved the First Ladies' exhibit. There are exhibits on pop culture (Where Kermit resides) and one devoted to food...I'm a bit biased, because that is my favorite museum in DC, but it will depend on the interests of your children. Look over the Smithsonian website with each of them and see what they find appealing, whether it's the animals or gems in the Natural History Museum, the airplanes in the Air and Space Museum, or Kermit in the American History Museum.
