Thanks for your replies!!
I have seen lots of photos and i know that Kauai is an island we would definitely want to see. I'll think about spending fewer days in LA and SF although i would love to see these cities too and i don't know when our next chance will be.
The place to stay in Kauai is the north shore from the photos i've seen. What about Maui?

First, as an Oahu fanatic, I'd slightly tweak the above itinerary to:
2 days - San Fran
4 days - Oahu
4 days - Maui
4 days - Kauai
2 days - LA
...to keep it fair and square
No, seriously, there are so many things to see on Oahu that I think three days would shortchange it slightly.
Haven't been to Maui yet, but from what I've read, I believe Kaanapali is the fun, beachy area, while Wailea is the more upscale beachy area. If you're near Lahaina, my friend loved the nightlife there. (She likes to boogie...hehe.)

Unless you have almost a month for vacation, I would suggest California OR Hawaii. There is so much to do in both places, that 2 (or even 3) weeks is not enough for both.
For California, I would suggest flying into San Diego. You could easily fill anywhere from 3-6 days there. The L.A., then take a leisurely trip up the coastline over the next 3-4 days. Maybe stay a night neat Solvang, a couple of days in Carmel/Monterey, a few in San Francisco, and 1-2 in the wine country.
In Hawaii, in order not to be too rushed, you need to allot 4-5 days for each island. Each travel day between islands is essentially lost. Check out at 9:00 am, get to the airport 1 1/2 ahead of departure, 1/2-1 hour flight, get baggage, get rental car, travel to hotel. The time gets eaten up fast.

actually, we were just talking about island hopping yesterday...if you fly with Go! (www.iflygo.com) or Island Air (www.islandair.com), the security line is not as long so you don't have to arrive AS early. Well, on Oahu, anyway. I think all neighbor island airports go through one security line! anyway, the fares may be cheaper, too, as there are constant fare wars nowadays.
