Which airport is most convenient for Santa Rose/Sonoma County?

We plan to enjoy a long weekend in the California Wine Country after a conference in Las Vegas in July and will be staying at the Vintner's Inn in Santa Rosa. With pricing and schedules being similar, which airport (SFO, OAK or SMF) will be most convenient to fly into based on the least amount of travel time and traffic to get to our hotel? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

I would think that Sacramento would be best. It's easy in / easy out and you wouldn't have any of the city headaches that you would in S.F. or Oakland.

How about the Santa Rosa airport? That would be too easy...

If not the closest "large" airport with easy access by car is Oakland - Just head up 880 to 580 North across the San Rafael Bridge and then connect to 101 North up to Santa Rosa. Do not come anytime around rush hour as Oakland 880/80/580 and 101 can all be parking lots. The morning commute might be easier once you get north of the Bay Bridge if you have no choice. Anytime on a weekend and you won't have much trouble going North.

Oh I wish it were true,f64club!

I live a tad south of Santa Rosa and we never use SMF-we have plotted and planned, but it has never made sense
for us time or traffic wise.

To Santa Rosa from SMF (Sacramento) is 2 hrs. The I-80 corridor between
Hwy 37(Vallejo) and Sacto is never a picnic, then you have to come across on Hwy 37 to Hwy 101 North at Novato and then up to Santa Rosa-this leg is
S_L_O_W after 3PM on weekdays, don't get me started about Friday afternoon.

From SFO and OAK is 1.5 hrs.
you still have to drive the 101 North at Novato regardless of your airport.-you will have to go that way from SFO & OAK as well.

(If the Napa Valley or Sonoma town is where you want to stay, then SMF(Sacramento),
SFO and OAK are all about and hour, unless it's after 3PM-then it's commute
snafus-or not-on any given day.

Pick your price, IMHO-you will have traffic on any route, well except
12PM-4AM....
I'd pick a morning flight from Vegas
and get yourself up here !

PS
Ever considered the Santa Rosa Airporter bus from SFO and picking your car up at the Vintner's Inn ?

Hey montyw !
Sadly, Santa Rosa has NO regularly scheduled commercial flights anymore.
Yet, there's always private jet !

Hi BluEyezNSC, I agree with razzledazzle, Sacramento is a great airport, but not for you. AS RD said the traffic on 1-80 can get real bad. And it seems to get worse monthly.

A shuttle bus to either SFO or Oakland (if there is one) would be the best IMHO.

Do not know if in the Santa Rosa area there is the SuperShuttle service. I use them to get to Sacramento aiport and have always been very happy with them (although you can have a few stops while they pick up other travellers but it is no big deal). Have a fun trip!

There is a shuttle out of Oakland..Airport Express...26.00 one way. It goes to the Days Inn in Santa Rosa, among a couple of other stops. Don't know how close to YOUR hotel that is but maybe could cab it over obe if you are renting a car, cab it from there to where ever you pick up your car. It leaves Oakland on the even hour...I think it's every two hours. Web site http://www.airportexpressinc.com/

crefloors-that is the same shuttle
I am talking about from SFO. If you take it from SFO it leaves every 1-1.5
hours depending on time of day.
If from OAK, it is every 2 hours.
It's what we always use to/from
both airports - no traffic hassles.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions! We have decided to fly in and out of Oakland because Southwest is $40+/each less expensive than United to/from SFO. I will also look into taking the shuttle service to/from the airport and renting our car when we get to Santa Rosa. Thanks again! ~Sandi~
