which airport for DC?

Ok, I knew there was Dulles and Ronald Reagan, but now I'm seeing Washington National? Coming from Boston, which airport is typically used. RR is much closer to downtown.

How long does a taxi typically take to get from Dulles to Capitol Hill area? Thanks a bunch!

Washington National and Ronald Reagan are the same airport. It was renamed RR about 8-10 years ago.

Washington Flyer is the only company running cabs out of Dulles. Cost from the airport to downtown will run in the range of $50. There are a couple of less expensive options, Washington Flyer Bus to West Falls Church Metro and also a public bus from the airport to downtown.

Oops, forgot the time question. 45-60 minutes during non rush. During rush, kind of a crap shoot.

Thanks obxgirl,

The fares to Dulles are much less than DCA. I'm bummed b/c apparently Southwest flies from DCA to Prov., but not into it from Providence! JetBlue has some good fares to Dulles.

I'm so excited, I'm taking my mother who is a certified political junkie, she watches CSPAN for fun. I am very much looking forward to exploring DC with her! We are trying not to bump into the Cherry Blossom festival timing, we are right on the border.

I also enjoyed OBX a few years ago! Thanks for your help.

My daughter and I get to Washington by taking AirTran between Boston and Baltimore (BWI) all the time. It's usually much cheaper than going to National. As little as $40 each way if you plan far enough in advance. BWI is actually about halfway between Baltimore and DC, and about the same distance from DC as Dulles.

I don't know about transit from Dulles into DC, but from BWI it's esay, fast, and cheap: The Metro's Express bus, B-30, leaves the BWI terminal every 40 minutes, 7 days per week, and will take you to the Greenbelt Metro station in 30 minutes for $3.00.

Wow,

That is great to know, I will definitely look into that, thanks. You can't beat $3.00. The Dulles options were taxi for $54, shuttle for about $35, or take a bus to transfer to the Metro, cheaper but not too convenient.

I also fly into BWI often, on Southwest.

On weekdays, I frequently take MARC commuter train, $6 from airport to Union Station (where you could walk to Capitol Hill from, actually) but it it's the weekend, or the next train will be too long a wait, then I take the B30 bus.

BTW, if you return by B30 bus, you get a transfer coupon from dispensers located near the top of the escalator that goes down to the tracks at the station you BOARD the Metro at, and the bus fare will be only $2.10 back to the airport.

There's a similar bus the 5A from Dulles that stops at Rosslyn Metro station in Arlington VA ends/starts at L'Enfant Plaza. It's not as nice (no luggage racks) as B30 from BWI, but will do if you're traveleing very light.

Metro:

Yes, as rb_trveler pointed out, you can save by getting a transfer on your return, as you enter the Metro station when you begin the return trip. So you CAN beat $3.00!

I see from your other post that you'd NOT be walking from Union Station, if you are staying at the recommended hotel. Taxicabs are plentiful and cheap from Union Station or if you take B30+Metro, get off Green line at L'Enfant plaza and get on Blue line towards Largo or Orange Line towards New Carrolton ... whichever arrives first, and get off subway 2 stops later ... if you can do what walk. Have a great trip.

Even if you don't want the inconvience and hassle of taking the bus (and yes, it is inconvient and a hassle), you will save so much money flying into BWi or Dulles that you can afford a taxi or SuperShuttle from either airport.
