I love Smith & Wollenskys, though I have to say it is for sharply dressed executive types, not for tourists in jeans and tennis shoes. It has the most amazing wine list in NYC, you can find California Cabernets there that are not available anywhere else! Splurge on a $100 bottle with your steak and you will be very very happy. Of course it is even better if your company is paying the bill! Also a great bar scene. If you find it a bit stuffy, right behind and around the corner is a lite version of the restaurant, same great meat and wine list but more of a pub feeling, Wollenskys. You would probably feel happiest going there on your own pocketbook. Another great, awesome place is Knickerbockers which serves some amazing beef in a sort of 1960s style, fern bar and leather booths setting. Be sure to get one of the booths. This is a Greenwich local neighborhood favorite, on University Place at 10th Street. Get there relatively early for a good table.
