Peter Luger has the reputation as the best steakhouse in NYC, with porterhouse a specialty of their. Never been, myself.

Peter Luger features only porterhouse and its reputation is routinely reinforced. When I went, they basically set up the dinner as Steak for [# of guests] and brought out sliced porterhouse per the order; they offered appetizers and sides too, of course. That was probably 20 years ago, but the menu on the website (www.peterluger.com) indicates that nothing has changed.

And it's easy to reach -- just take the J or M train over the Williamsburg Bridge to Brooklyn and get off at the first stop, walk west on Broadway to the steakhouse.

There are a bunch of steakhouses that I want to try in NYC
here are a list of (currently) 18 that I want to try
http://www.yelp.com/user_details_boo...taurants.steak
ones that especially intrigue me are:
Keens, Knickerbocker, Sparks, adn Arthur's Tavern in NJ.

I just had an awesome meat eating experience at Chivito d' Oro in Jackson Heights, Queens. Uruguayan steakhouse. Pretty damn amazing.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed the Kobe Club, we went during restaurant week so it wasn't too terribly expensive. By far, our favorite steakhouse!

Strip Jont in the Village

And although we have not eaten there, Keith McNally's new menu of steaks at the old Minetta Tavern, has received excellent reviews.

berlac1 - I've been going to Peter Luger's for 35 years - it is the place to go for porterhouse steaks. As BigRuss said, you order steak for the number of people in your group. But, do not order for more than 3 because the cut of meat becomes different. I learned this many years ago. So, if you're two people, order steak for two; four people order two steaks for two; five people a steak for two and a steak for 3, etc. Be aware that if you order medium rare, for example, some pieces may be close to medium because a steak for two is large. It is delicious. If you decide to go, regulars on this forum can tell you what else to order there. Most diners there don't even look at a menu. My mouth is watering!

Old Homestead, Palm and Quality Meats are good too. If you want to venture into Queens, the place to go is Christo's steakhouse in Astoria.

You can check menupages.com for menus and reviews.

While crtiquing food is. of course, highly subjective, that list of 18 steakhouses is unusually subjective. Of all the carnivores I kmow, not one had even had Bobby Van's in the top 5 or 10.

Peter Lugers and Keens. I have heard great things about the Strip Club.

We are headed to NYC this Fall and I think it will be PL's for us.

FYI - Peter Luger does not accept any credit cards other than their own. Bring lots of cash!
