Where would you go...need help from experienced Fodorites!
Hi
My hubby and I want to get away for a long weekend without the kids and we have no idea where to go. I do know what we want. To go to a city or town that we can get to know and yet get to relax. Here are some ideas we have thought of:
Boston, Charlotte N.C., New Orleans, Jackson Hole, Philly. We would love any ideas for a driving trip. We live out West so I would prefer something more East coast or at least past the Rockies. No Vegas please grew up there. Every web site I pull up for ideas has Vegas at the top of the list. Also Just went to NYC for Christmas. Any website ideas would be great to. Just need to go somewhere new and fall in love with the city.
Thanks so much for your time!!

Momof5 - I think it would help if we had a little more information. You say you live out West so are looking for something more East Coast. You also say this is for a long weekend. How many days do you have? If you go to the East Coast for a long weekend, you will spend a lot of that weekend flying.
You also mention a driving trip. I would assume this means instead of going to the East Coast, you would drive somewhere closer to home. Or would you fly to the East Coast and then drive? Where in the West do you live? Also what time of year are you planning to take this trip? With more info, I am sure you'll get lots of suggestions.

Fly to Toronto. Rent a car at the airport and drive to Niagara Falls (and hour or so from the Toronto airport) and trhe nearby town of Niagara on the Lake. Enjoy the falls and walk around NotL and perhaps spend a night tehre, depending on your arrival time at the Toronto airport.
Then drive to Toronto, check into a good downtown hotel, return the rental car, and wander around Toronto (a few cabs may be involved) until it is time to go back to the airport and fly home.
You visit anotehr country, see a wonder of the world, check out some vineyards and winders (NotL), visit one of the great hospitality cities of the world, explore various culturtes in Toronto, eat really well in any of dozens of ethnic categories, understand the language without problems, and get some bargains with the exchange rate.
Or fly to Calgary, which is just enough "past the Rockies" for you to be on flat land yet be able to look west and see the snow-capped peaks of the mountains.

My DH and I went to New Orleans for three nights, and were able to do quiet a bit. We went on a Swamp Tour, cemetery tour, walked around quite a bit, rode on the street cars, took a horse and buggy ride, took the riverboat ride (don't bother), ate in some good restaurants, had beignets. It was quiet a different experience from anything we have ever done, and lots of fun. Stayed at Royal Sonesta, got a good deal on their web page. Boston is great, but something to do with the kids. I hear Charleston, SC is wonderful. Good luck!

A perfect city for a long weekend would be Philadelphia. You don't need a car in the city, although if you feel like renting a car and driving around, you could fly into NYC then drive the 2 hours to Phil.
You can get your fill of historical buildings, charming hotels and great restaurants.
Boston is great and you can rent a car and drive out into the countryside. Two hours from Boston is the Berkshire Mt area..forests, lakes, charming old towns. But I would spend the entire time in Boston.
Or fly into Atlanta or Jacksonville Fl and drive to either Savannah Ga or Charleston SC.
Both are brimming with charm, history and great places to stay and eat.
That trip would incorporate your driving trip also
Hope this helps~
