Where to stay with young children in San Diego

I am looking for recommendations for a hotel to stay at for 4 nights with 2 young children (aged 3 and 1) in the San Diego (ideally beach/mission bay) area in October. I want a toddler friendly hotel, reasonably close to a nice beach. Cost is less of an issue - I am more bothered about getting the right kind of hotel for my kids. (Incidentally, stayed at the Loews Coronado two years ago but found it too remote and somewhat extortionate - I suppose if you're that far from anywhere and you don't put a coffee machine in the room you can charge $6 plus for a coffee!!!)

Try the La Jolla Shores hotel (Formerly the Sea Lodge). It won't be cheap, though, even in October.

And of course, there's always the Hotel Del Coronado, but that would be even more expensive.

The best beach for kids your age is either La Jolla Shores or Coronado Beach..
La Shores Hotel is oceanfront and a great family hotel..should be around $200 or less a night in October..
Great beach to swim and play..
Hotel Del in Coronado is lovely and voted best top ten beach in US.
Not a big fan of PB or Mission Bay..lots of college kids, homeless and lots of partying going on..maybe a little less in October..
San Diego is perfect in October!

I agree with TahitiTams about the best beaches for kids. Another place to stay in Coronado is Glorietta Bay Inn, right across the street from the Hotel Del Coronado. My friends have stayed there a few times and liked it. All you do is walk across the street to go to the beach and of course you are right in town so can walk to restaurants, shops, etc.

I do like the look of the La Jolla Shores. In anybody's opinion, is it worth paying an extra $50 per night for a beach front vs. garden room?

The Hilton on Mission Bay could be an option. Also Humphrey's Half Moon Bay Resort and Inn might work for you. Plenty of open space around the hotels and not that remote. Humphrey's is more of a low rise and could make it easier to keep an eye on the kids.

You can try and see if they upgrade you for free since it is in October..
I do like the oceanfront view room better than the garden and $50 isn't too outrageous per night, but I would try the free upgrade way and if they don't bite then pay..
Also, sign up for their e-mail so you can maybe get a free upgrade.
The restaurant at the hotel is pretty good and they have Piatti's a block away along with Barbarella..
Indian Summer in October is one of the best times to be on the beach in San Diego!

My sister has stayed in a garden room at La Jolla Shores every summer and, as I would visit her there, I would save the $200 for the 4 nights and spend it elsewhere. You are right on the beach as it is, and with two little kids you will either be at the pool or on the beach. This is by far my favorite hotel in San Diego - I recommend it to all of my visitors. The location can't be beat and I love the intimate commercial neighborhood nearby.

Sorry about my english! Ugh. What I meant to say was I have seen both the ocean front and garden rooms and I think the garden rooms are fine.
