Hi SF7307..just to clarify..there are 2 Hilton's in the San Diego Downtown area..very close to each other. One is in Gaslamp per se and the other I was referring too is San Diego Hilton Bayfront ..on the water all by itself and quite a distance from anything.

I believe I mentioned that one can stay in/near Old Town and take the frequent Trolley downtown. Some like downtown - where there is more night life/younger folks - but also usually a bit more expenwsive - and some like Old Town - which is quieter and still fun to walk around.

To each their own.

I would stay in Coronado which is across the bay from downtown. It is clean, residential, has lots of good restaurants, a beautiful beach, lovely marina wwhere you can rent boats (Glorietta Bay), a classic golf course, it is easy to bike around (the island is small and flat), the people friendly and it is a short bus ride over the bridge into Downtown SD, the Zoo, Old Town, or the Gaslamp District (downtown), the Embarcadero (is reached from Coronado via a passenger ferry ride of about 5 -10 minutes).

I would check it out.

1JAR, sorry, I knew that - and she actually stayed at the Bayfront, and loved it.

If you don't have a vehicle, then I recommend the Old Town area as it is close to the trolley lines and less expensive than the downtown and Gaslamp areas. If your budget can afford downtown and you are interested in live entertainment, then the Gaslamp is fine. Just remember that the Gaslamp District exists for the nearby Convention Center ($$$$). Do not stay in Mission Valley without a car, you cannot walk to the trolley stop from the hotels in MV in less than 20-30 minutes. The public transit in San Diego is fine for the downtown area, Balboa Park, Old Town, border crossing, and a few other select areas like the Point Loma lighthouse and Sea World, but not for any outlying areas. Check out the transit system vs. what you want to do in San Diego at http://www.sdmts.com/home1.asp
