Where To Purchase Wine Pre-Cruise
I am looking for a place to by wine prior to our cruise in early June. We are staying at the Comfort Inn Suites in Times Square (46th between 6th & 7th). Usually we drive to port so we just bring our wine from home, but we don't want to mess with having to pack wine bottles for our flight.
Is there a place we can walk to that will have a decent selection at a decent price? We don't need fancy exotic wines, just your typical mid-priced/types would be fine. We typically buy whatever is on special at Costco
If possible, we really need a place that is open pretty late at night. Do they sell alcohol on Sundays in NY? In Texas, they don't sell it before noon on Sundays.
Thanks a bunch!!

Wine can be sold after noon on Sundays. Note that wine shops cannot sell beer, in case that was on your list.
Most NYC wine stores will deliver free, so you could call, place your order, and ask them to have it waiting for you when you arrive. If you want to go this route, we will give you some names of stores in the general area, with phone numbers.
I am quite certain that there will be liquor stores open in that area until at least 10pm on Saturday night.
When are you arriving at the hotel (day and time)?

Map your hotel on maps.google.com and then use the "search nearby" feature for liquor stores (which is where you buy wine in NYC). The closest place will be Morrell's in Rockefeller Center but it's certainly not cheap. I don't that there are many decent liquor stores in that area since it's not very residential. You can either follow ek's suggestion and order from a place not to close and have them deliver to you or you can take a cab ride. Here are reviews for the closest one I see. http://www.yelp.com/biz/reidy-wine-a...r-inc-new-york

There are definitely liquor stores within a few blocks that sell wine. You'll probably do better if you look for stores over on 9th Avenue, which is more residential and will, therefore, have more resident-friendly prices. Morrell's is great if you want a fine vintage, but it's really impractical if you want something cheap. I know there's a liquor store on Broadway between 56th and 57th, but it's not the cheapest since it caters to convention-goers at the nearby Hilton and Sheraton hotels.
I can't recommend a specific store, but the front desk in the hotel will probably be able to direct you, most likely to Hell's Kitchen.
If you are interested in doing a little exploring further afield, you can go to Trader Joe's, which is on 14th Street between 3rd and Broadway (south side of the street). It has the cheapest Costco-level prices in Manhattan. But almost every residential neighborhood in NYC has some store that sells cheap wine.
Although wine can be sold on Sundays, not all liquor stores are open.

mkm, you might also be interested in Not For Tourists - little guidebooks that list everything a resident might want to know in a neighborhood they don't live in. You can access most of their info for free on their website ( notfortourists.com ).
