Where to park

My family and I are going to be staying in Parsippany,NJ for two days in December. We are coming into New York City to the area of 96th and Broadway to see a show and the sites. Is there any place to park cheap and ride the subway ?

We stayed at Holiday Inn Parsippany last year, and drove to Penn Station Newark. Seems the parking was $10. Make certain you park at an ATTENDED lot, that will still be open & attended upon your return. Ours was unattended, and we found a window smashed (they left the golf club behind) and almost everything had been emptied out.

If it's a weekday, I think there are NJT buses to NYC that depart Parsippany (free) park & ride lots.

There is alternate side on street parking in that area. On one side of the street you can't park on Monday and Thursday from 11:30 to 1 pM; no parking the other side on Tuesday and Friday. Parking rules are not in effect on Wednesday or Saturday and Sunday.

If coming in from Parsippany I would suggest using the Lincoln Tunnel into the city (the GW Bridge is frequently much more crowded than the tunnel). When you exit the tunnel make an immediate right hand turn onto 40th Street (don't use the far right hand lane of the right most tube entering the tunnel as it will leave you heading south towards 36th Street - all the other lanes bear to the left leaving the tunnel and then you can turn right on 40th. A hundred yards or so up 40th you'll cross 9th Ave. Immediately after 9th ave on the right hand side is an indoor parking garage operated by hertz (they also rent cars there). It is secure indoor parking and has the lowest rates in the entire area (short of parking out on 10th or 11th at an outdoor lot). It usually runs about $15-18 including taxes for any 12 hour period on weekdays and about $8 on weekends for any 12 hours. They close at 11 PM so you must get there promptly after an evening show to pick up the vehicle. It's safe and reliable - I've been parking there regulalry for the past several years. That block of 40th Street heading towards 8th Ave is safe but a bit seedy and not too clean. best bet is to just walk up 9th Ave two blocks or more and then head east towards Times Square - only takes a few minutes to get there on foot. If taking the you can walk kover 40th to 8th and enter at the corner by Port Authority entrance - access to the A, C and E trains is right there. If planning to take the N,R or the 1,2,3 or 9.... just walk above ground to 42nd and 7th to enter the subway. You can get also there through underground tunnels from the Port Authority entrance but the tunnels are a pain to walk through - stick to above ground to get to the entrance for the latter trains. It's conceivable that you could park in the area of 96th but you have to cross the Hudson to get into the city first and the Lincoln Tunnel entrance is closer to 96th than the GWB.

I'm not sure what you want. The show is at 96th?? Do you want to park near there? If so, where do you want to take the subway to? Or do you want to park somewhere else and take the subway to this oddly placed theatre?

Do you think that the people that have the answers might be more likely to find your question if you INCLUDED WHERE YOU WANT TO PARK in the subject?

I'm also confused as to where you want to park but if it is the upper west side in the area of 96th and Broadway there are several Kinney garages there (one on 93rd, one on 96th and a few others) and they are cheaper than parking downtown for the most part.

Notice how Al has never returned. I guess his mother never taught him that it's common courtesy to thank people who take the time & effort to give you good information. Then again, given the vague thread header and the confusing question, maybe he's too embarrassed to show his face again!
