Where to camp between Detroit & NYC?
Hi, our best friends have moved to Detroit and we want to meet up this summer, preferrably camping somewhere or some lake area inns. Any suggestion for great locations?
From the map it looks like maybe somehwere northern Penn St. could work? or am I way off?
The location does not need to be exactly in the middle. They (Detroit people) have 2 kids under 3 so distance could be much shorter for them and we can drive the longer distance from new york.
Or, the location could be much closer to Detroit, my husband and I can fly into Detroit and go camp somewhere in michigan. We just thought it could be fun for us to drive and do a little road trip b/c we don't get to do that here in manhattan.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

The URL for PA State Parks with camping is http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/statepar...n/camping.aspx . Another site is http://www.campingpa.com/ .
There are some superb places to camp in the state. Reservations, of course, would be strongly advised...

If you don't mind driving a longer distance than your friends, consider camping in one of the Ontario Provincial Parks. For locations of parks go to http://www.ontarioparks.com/; then, select "Browse Maps" from the list of Options. You can select various locations from ones close to Detroit to places much further away that you may want to save for another time (e.g., Algonquin Provincial Park). Another site is: http://www.ontarioparks.com I've camped around Barrie area and loved it, but your friends may prefer something closer.
If you fly into Detroit and meet your friends, consider Leelanau Peninsula and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan - http://www.nps.gov/slbe/pphtml/camping.html. Here are some web sites:

DH Day campground - http://www.nps.gov/slbe/DHDAY.htm

Also, on Fodors, http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=1
This area is my favorite.

How about the finger lakes or Niagara Falls area? We drove to Detroit a couple of summers ago from the Hartford area and AAA mapped the shortest route through NY into Canada and back down into Michigan. Niagara Falls was about 7-8 hours from Hartford (so probably close to the same distance from NYC). And Detroit is about 4 to 4 1/2 hours from Niagara Falls. Finger Lakes would be closer for you - probably half-way for all of you.
