where to buy theatre tickets in NY & rec ommendations

We are visiting NY for 3 night in October, I have been checking 'Whats On' on Broadway. The list wasn't big (or off- Broadway) am I missing something, do you know any good wesites, also would we be better waiting till we got there to buy (we are English) or buy in advance? We are open to suggestions, which shows would you recommend. " we fancied were Oklahoma and The Crucible but if I am correct they are now finished - do they come back or is it final? Thanks you so much.

Hi Lynn,

A good site to go to is www.playbill.com . It has news on what's playing, you can sign up to be a free member and get some discounts on select shows.

To save money, and if your schedule is fairly open, you can go to TKTS to get your tickets the day of the show. You'll get really good discounts on the shows. Please check out the link below - there's lots of information there.

If you want to see something that is opening soon or is a current hot ticket, I'd suggest ordering tickets ahead of time. If you don't have your heart set on specific shows I think I'd take my chances with TKTS -- you can get 50% off and could actually go see two shows for the price of one if you wanted to.

For a more comprehensive list of shows, you might try Playbill.com as it usually lists all shows still running on and off-Broadway.

In terms of buying tickets, it really depends on the show, and the night of the week you are thinking about. For a first run hit that hasn't been around all that long, you might need to buy now, if they are even available. For a show that's been running for some time, like Cabaret, you might be able to get discounted tickets, right up until curtain time at the Theater, or at the TKTS booth in Times Square.

Unless a show is switching theaters, once it's closed it probably won't come back.

Both Oklahoma and The Crucicle are closed and will not be returning. It's too early to get a complete list of what shows will be playing in October. Many of the ones now playing will be closed by then, and many new ones will open in the interim. What type of shows are you looking for--musicals, dramas, comedies?
To check on what's playing now, check out:

Go to TKTS---it is the best spot to buy tickets at discounted prices. However, you have to be open--it can be hard to get some shows--so have a few choices. Stand on line early.
