I can't give an exact answer but usually tickets start going on sale for a 'big' musical, a few months before previews. Sometimes American Express offers tickets to their customers before it is open to the general public.

Out of curiosity, I just looked to see when Young Frankenstein tickets went sal. The box office opened early sept for sales. Previews are eaerly Oct, opening is Early Nov, so about 2 months prior.
This example is a show that high profile with high expectations. Lesser known shows may be different.

Most Broadway shows (especially musicals) will have their own website. It will list the ticket and box office information there.
Usually shows will offer tickets through either Ticketmaster or Telecharge even before they open their own boxoffice at the actual theatre.
Playbill.com and Broadwaybox.com are both good sources for "news" of upcoming shows, as well as sources for discount codes for shows.
