Be forewarned for Di Fara's:
Because of the popularity of Dom's creations, there is generally at least a one hour wait to order your pizza. Try to go on an off day/night (midweek or early Saturday afternoon) or be prepared for an inordinately long wait. Pizza is good, place looks like a dump.

Squeaky, We waited in line in Philly at Jim's(I think) for 1 and 1/2 hours for the best philly cheesesteak, about two years ago. So I know what it's like to wait for food. The philly cheesesteak was worth it, I will wait for a pizza if it's worth it!
Jim's was a dump also, and the line went on around the block!!

Had wonderful pizza at Patsy's on the upper west side, along with perfect calamari fritti, horrible caesar salad and terrible house wine.

The average pizza [I was going to say worst] in NYC is 100 times better than what I get here in SW Colorado. I miss NY pizza so much! I miss so many NY foods...hard rolls, a good wedge from italian deli, anything from NY bakeries, kosher deli, the list goes on and on. <sigh> But we do have great green chili here.

Just want say thanks for the pizza recommendations. This dated thread came in handy for my most recent trip to NYC. I haven't had pizza here in NYC yet that I have liked, but we went to Gonzo's last night and it was great! I loved the paper thin crust. I'm still looking for that great slice of pepperoni pizza, but in the meantime, Gonzo's satisfied my pizza craving!

You're probably going to stay in Midtown. Go to Angelo's on 57th...you got a problem with that?

I have been to all of them, and by far, the very best pizza is at Di Fara (but its small, with a long outside wait) and the most overrated is Totonno's in Coney Island. Its a two-minute walk from the subway stop.

Angelo's 117 W57...between 6th and 7th. Coal oven pizza. Not for whiners.
