When to Visit...weekend or week day

We are planning a trip to New York, mostly the Manhattan area in mid August. What we are trying to decide is if we should go say a Friday to Monday or Monday to Thursday....So which do you prefer weekend or weekdays in New York??

Thank you for any input.

In August the weekend will be quieter - so many locals on vacation or at the beach or in the country. And weekend hotel rates are usually much lower due to many fewer business travelers (except in the most budget range - then don;t know if day of the week matters).

That said - museums and other attractions are more crowded on the weekends due to locals stuck in town trying to find things to do with their kids.

I just wanted to add that you are smart to plan your trip so that you don't have to actually leave NYC on a Friday. Last summer, my husband and I discovered the hard way, on our way to the aiport on a Friday afternoon, that so many New Yorkers head out of town at that time. It took us forever to get to the airport, and we left with plenty of time to spare.

That being said, we've done 8 day stays in NYC that included weekdays and weekends. We noticed that the city was always busy and crowded but we still had a wonderful time. If you want to to go to Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty, try to get on the first ferry to help beat some of the crowds. Just an idea! I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Agree with what's been said, so it really depends on what you plan to do. If you're going for theater, just remember most shows are dark (closed) on Mondays and so are many of the museums. (MOMA is closed on Tues.) For shopping, in Aug. it doesn't really matter.

I agree though, try to avoid coming and going when locals would be coming and going to weekend homes (Fri 3-7 pm and Sun after 6) Also be aware that traveling from either LGA or JKF you could run into beach traffic (day trips) on Sat/Sat.

In Aug, I don't think hotel prices will be that different weekday vs. weekend.

Thank you. We are only planning on doing the touristy things, Time square, 9/11 Memorial, Empire State Building etc.

I am looking forward to it but I have so many questions.

Thanks again for the help
