When is the best time to visit NYC, and for how long?
I had the pleasure of visiting NYC for the first time this past March and did all the touristy must dos. I absolutely loved the city but was travelling with someone who couldn't walk very far. I'd love to return for another visit and just wander around all the wonderful neighborhoods. what is the best time of year to come back? (when the humidity isn't too bad), and I know one could wander around forever, but how long should I come for to do the city justice. I'm a good walker, so that won't be a problem for me. Thanks to all for any advice.

Not being an NYC native, I cannot speak on the consistency of the weather, nor its humidity in general, but I would personally think that early to mid fall (middle weeks in October?) would be wonderful. Central Park in its fall colors, strolls in Greenwich Village, warm in the day and a bit of a snap at night-- I think that would be practically ideal. Anyone else...?

HI Amygirl,
I was there this past May..the weather was pretty nice...I only needed a jean jacket on a few days..and no jacket on the others..It only rained once..I was there for 1 week and was able to do as much as one can.
Highlights: WAlking around Soho, Greenwich Village, going into Chinatown ( Canal St) and bartering for bags, Lower East side ( Eating at Katz Deli), Took in a Yankees game, went on the staten island ferry ( its free and great views of lady liberty)..hanging in Central park, touring upper west side, times square at night..whew..i can go on and on!
Let me know if you need any other info!

Late September and most of October would be great. While you may get the occassional indian summer day, the temps are usually in the mid 70's, low 60's. Perfect walking around weather.
This is one of my favorite times in NY as the restaurants and bars start to get crowds again, after the summer house season ends.

Christmastime is wonderful, but very cold and very crowded.
October is nice, but sometimes quite chilly and/or rainy. Also, hotel rates are high due to all the conventions in October.
Late May and June are wonderful except for the occasional unseasonable heat wave.
September is my favorite.
One of the best ways to enjoy an overview of all the neighborhoods, then visit those most appealing to you, is from the open air upper deck of the double decker tour buses.

October, October, October. It's before the cold & touristy Christmas season (which starts in late November). September's usually pretty good too, but can be too hot sometimes.
Stay as long as your feet can take! I've been here many years and every weekend I still find a street or two that I've never been on before. There are just endless things to see.
