Cheers all! Boy is it a TGIF week!

Poison, first & foremost is Syke Berry vodka with pink lemonade & a splash of seltzer. Sipped through a big straw (think Pottery Barn goes McDonalds). Starting to slowly forget all the nutters at work this week.

Mother Nature has been kind to us in our travels. No big traumas or lost out trips. Our worst have been a few rainy days on St John & most recently we got brushed by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Arlene while in Key West back in June. We were in the bar at Conch Republic, so how bad could it be?

OWJ, I remember that snowstorm! I live right near EWR. Still thinking of you & Shayna baby. What a way to go out with the bite and all. My Nattie boy can put up quite a fight when he's sick (read - antichrist). On any other day he's a 20 lb. angel kitty. Glad you guys have Alley Katz to comfort you tonight.

DH is off to play cards with the boys. I'm thinking about linguini with garlic & oil and some more poison!

Yummmm, vodka lemonade.

BTW, where do you live Trish? I grew up in Rockland Co. NY, 20 houses over the Bergan Co. line.

R5 We are ALWAYS game for STJ. Name the time & pick a Villa. We're there! We'll bring the Tequila too!

Hoping new business venture will net enough extra $$ for retirement property on STJ. Real Estate there is yikes...$$$$$ though!

From what I'm gathering in the coversation, it's St. John you're looking at. I'm a bit farther south, but I'm willing to play host if you get this far! Just let me know!

Hey Statia!

I'm sipping a draft Labatt's from Marvella the beer keg refrigerator. I'm thinking about "kickin' it up a notch" to my usual VO Manhattan though. Liquor is quicker as they say in the bid-ness.

Nice to see you here too Marianna!

Weather and travel. Hmmm. Which one should I mention?

The time my October beach vacation was rescheduled from Panama City Beach to St Pete due to hurricane? I don't even remember it's name. I think it was Opal in '95. Gee, '95 seems to be a theme! (I was actually a lucky one. I wasn't there and had a 2 week notice to re-book.)

I lived in Chicago for 3 years and flew United almost exclusively in the 90's. I can't begin to count all the thunderstorm, snowstorms and work slowdowns I suffered at the hands of that airline. OK there were all the first class upgrades too...

Maybe I should mention April this year. Due to a thunderstorm in Denver I slept behind gate B39. All the other gates were staked out. 39 was the best I could do.

How about the tornado? Summer of '98 I was driving home from a client in Muncie, IN. I saw the tornado on the east side of Indianapolis that flipped the 1/2 of a trailer-ed manufactured home over and blocked all three south bound lanes of I-465.

March this year? Weather over Frankfurt delayed my landing by 2 hours. (Weather? What weather? It was overcast.) Just enough to miss my flight to Paris and get to spend 5 glorious hours in Frankfurt's airport.

Doesn't matter though. I still keep going. I'm lucky enough to travel enough that my weather problems are a very small percentage of all my trips.

R5 - HM is our competition! I'm a Haworth Dealer (also one of the top 4 office furniture mfg.)

As for STJ we are partial to Salt Pond Bay area. Usually stay out in Concordia...Love where your villa is. We've spent many a night at Island Blues, although I'm not singing! Definitely prefer to be closer to Coral Bay.

Pick a week...

Statia, we'll come visit you too!

Just some Chardonnay and my leftover ravioli.

Mother Nature- hmmmmmm! Well my travel was stopped by a snowstorm all across the North and I got stranded in NYC for 3 extra days in 2000- but that was NOT tragic. We ended up driving home eventually and got a free couple of flights to SF from ATA.

When I was very young I lived through some doozies. In 1967-68 winter, end of Jan. in Chicago I went to work on a Friday morning and walked back home in snow up to my waist in drifts (probably about 12-13 miles) and didn't make it home until Saturday about 1am wearing knee high boots and minnie skirt/jacket (it had been nice out). I had some inches of both legs that were blue for awhile. Then we went back outside finding people stuck in cars and digging them out until Sunday. I was so tired that I sleep with my clothes on after that until Monday.

But actually the very worst were the 2 different tornados that I've been in. One was traveling home from U.of I. on the expressway. We were 3 students in a car and we stopped on the Dan Ryan- down to a complete halt because of the debris. Another I was in the back yard and watched my shed fly right over my oldest kid and the fence. At the same time, my neighbor inside his own car flips upside down right on my lawn. That one was the worst. And I was NOT traveling, but should have been at least inside. No basement either. But there was almost no warning except that it looked like the light from the sun was green. I'll never forget how the light looked. I got my two very small (3, 2 yrs old)kids into my utility room by the grace of God. The door got ripped off in the process. But my neighbor was injured pretty badly and what I remember most is laying in all the glass wiping his face and holding his head still until more help came. And it didn't come very quickly.

Tiff, what you saw/experienced was a micro-burst. They are very small tornados and that's exactly what they do. Oftentimes they might only last about 1 to 2 minutes. I had that same thing happen with a glass table (no umbrella either) and I have never had one since. It looked like an invisible demon just picked it up and exploded it. I've also seen micro-bursts at the lake and they make water spouts.

All my European trips and distant flights or cruises etc. have been uneventful, yet all times I have been to FL in the last decade (probably 6)- it has rained and been cool if not cold. My friends down there laugh because they say I bring the weather from home with me.

Oh my Trish, I think we have something
else in common. During my career days
I did a stint with HM while dating
a local Haworth rep.
(Ha-ha, we thought we were so secret about it.)
I was an IA major, were you as well ?

We are thinking of St. John for May 2006, and Statia, I think we could convince the DH's to travel a little further south !

We could definitely be convinced to spend some time in STJ next May.

Hey Trish! Nice to see you posting too. I'm enjoying (nursing) the last little bit of Nouilly Prat red vermouth. A low count race weekend with only 3 overnighters for the Brickyard 400 race, they can drink the cheap stuff tomorrow.

I'm going to have to start posting NOLA questions. I know you've been a few times. I saw a poster say that 3 days was more than enough. I'm going to spend 9 nights with a friend and I'm having a hard time fitting it all in. I may ask you to help me make a few cuts on my "to do" list.

Grill duty? The curse of men.

At least I still use charcoal. If I'm going to be stuck cooking over a hot grill I'm going to at least play with petro-chemicals and matches. Can you say "woof" when the grill lights off?

Oh, Indy....my DH deals with fire hazards (or fires) on a daily basis and I STILL constantly say, "Hon, isn't that flame a bit high?"

What do I get in response? A chuckle and that's about it. Arrghhh.

(Emoticon of Statia pacing the patio because the flame is a bit high for her comfort).

Speaking of which...out of control grill fires are another "act of Mother Nature," whether traveling or not. No?

Hi everyone, TGIF.

Well I was just going to have icewater and/or V8 but then crefloors (over on Europe Board) suggested vodka would be good in the V8 so I made the supreme sacrafice and went to the store. So I am having a lovely bloody mary. Thanks crefloors

My gosh, you have all had some frightening experiences with Mother Nature. While I went to the store I was trying to think of anything horrible I have had and the only thing I can think of is some years ago trying to get out of the Sarasota airport due to storms. We finally took off and good grief, going across the Gulf of Mexico was a flight never to be forgotten. A lightning storm that goes beyond description. Many passengers started crying and/or praying. Landed in Texas, can't remember which airport but think it was DFW. We were to catch a plane to SFO, NOT. We were at the airport for something like 10 hours along with hordes of other miserable wannabe flyers. Nowhere to sit. Not an empty chair anywhere. A lot of the younger travellers were laying on the floor.

We stood and stood and stood. They told us not to leave the gate. There was a bar across from the gate. Suddenly a couple vacated a table and I flew to it. We sat down. No cocktail waitress. My DH looked exhausted and I knew he was starving. But no cafe or food of any kind at that gate.

I asked him if he would like me to go to the bar and order him something, a martini maybe? He said he felt so rotten he couldn't handle a martini but would love a Campari with a splash of soda. So up to the bar I went and sort of gently excused myself and elbowed my way through those big fellows in the cowboy hats and boots. Bartender came over and I said "one white wine, any kind will do and one Campari with a splash of soda please".
Bartender looked at me and said in the loudest voice imaginable "LADY THIS SURE AND HECK ISN'T SAN FRANCISCO, WE DON'T HAVVE CAMPARI!!!". All those big guys started chucking and snorting. I said, with as much dignity as possible "two white wines will be just fine".

Oh my, I sort of snuck back to the table to find my DH gone. He came back about 10 minutes later looking worse for the wear. Yes, he had heard the bartender. Of course a funny story later but not at the moment.

When we finally got the announcement that the weather had calmed down and we would be able to fly to SFO we also got an announcement that the time had passed for the original crew to fly us so they had called replacement crew members but it might take awhile for them to get from their homes to the airport due to flooded road conditions.
Now that certainly put a guilt trip on us.

Finally we were told we could board. The TA thanked everyone for their patience (we were a good bunch I have to admit probably because we were all to worn out and hungry to make a fuss). She then announced that their was no food to serve us BUT the pilot and his wife had picked all the apples from their trees for us. With that TA's, holding baskets of apples started passing them out. I have never tasted a better apple in all my life!!! Oh yes, perfect ending to a perfect flight. They had left all the luggage on the tarmac, guess the storm got so bad the baggage handlers fled the tarmac. So arriving home we opened up suitcases to find them flooded with water.

But some of you have had horrendous experiences. I am so sorry. But isn't it interesting, everyone keeps on travelling! CinCin.
