Any weather website will give you historic temperatures for any time period. I use http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp
It's generally not "very cold". Whether it's worth heading to Miami depends on how much time you have and what your preference is. Put some dates into kayak.com from all new york airports to get an idea of prices. Unfortunately the cheapest tickets tend to be those bought at least 2 weeks in advance. You can usually get a ticket for ~ $200 roundtrip but for next week, you'll pay more. Jetblue.com is one popular airline but there are loads of options. You can also fly into Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) to visit Miami. It's a smaller, saner airport imo.

Late October can be quite nice if there is an indian summer - warm enough for short sleeves during the day.
Or it can be downright chilly, with long sleeves and a light jacket needed. You should plan on it being chilly and be pleasantly surprised if you get some sunny days.
Nights you should expect it to cool off quite a bit.
We have no idea how long your trip is, so it's impossible for us to tell you whether it's "worth it." If you really want sun and warmth then NYC isn't a good destination for late October.

Well of course FL will be much warmer. It's 1500 miles further south. If you're comparing to the UK weather in NY will be somewhat similar in Oct (we're much hotter in the summer and colder in the winter, but similar in spring and fall).
If you want to go to FL that's fine - but do be aware that Orlando doesn;t have any beaches - it;'s in the centre of the state, the purpose is to visit the theme parks and it's mobbed with kids. For an adult vacation I would do South Beach in Miami.

It's always difficult to predict weather for any given area. Miami is about 250 south of Orlando so it stands to reason average temperatures COULD BE a few degrees warmer but the difference won't be significant during any given period.
There are a few theme parks/tourist attractions in the Miami area but none quite like the ones you'll find around Orlando.
I suggest you get a good Florida Guide Book or do a few internet searches using topics like "Things to do in Miami" or "Florida Theme Parks", etc. to find out what the state has to offer. Also, look at a map of the state to get some idea of where the various cities are located (i.e. near the beach, inland, the east coast, west coast, northern, southern or panhandle areas, etc.) so as to orient you. That may help you determine where you might want to visit.

There are dozens (hundreds) of tourist attractions in the Miami area, but no theme parks at all. But here's the thing: in order to visit Miami you really need a car. You don't need one if you are limiting yourself to South Beach, but then you will have only hotels, restaurants, night spots, and shopping. But that's what many people go to Miami for. Outside of this relatively compact area, there's really no transportation system to speak of that covers the area comprehensively.
If you go to Disney, there are some good water parks but no beaches at all since it's landlocked.

Kentgirl, do you really want to cross the pond to spend time at the beach? Truly, if you have 2 weeks, you can spend it on more interesting pursuits.
And bear in mind that October is still "hurricane" season. That's not to say you will encounter a hurricane, or even bad weather in FL, but it is a possibility.
Not sure what you consider "very cold", but as J62 said, temps. in late October in NY can vary from quite mild to very chilly, however, it is unlikely to be so cold that it should affect your decision to come here.

Kentgirl, for a big trip that is a week away, you don't seem very prepared. Weather.com is showing NYC to be around 60 during the first part of your visit. Miami is around 83 for the same period. There are scores of airlines that go from NYC to Florida. I am not sure how inexpensive any of them will be on such short notice but I suggest you use a search engine like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc. to get an idea of airlines and ticket prices.

With so many 'destination' options - NYC, Miami, even Washington, Boston and Philly - where are you meeting up with your friend. Can't imagine this person lives in all of them?
That's your start point or one that is decided by both of you.
One person's cold is another's 'pleasant' as today in NYC temps are in the low-60s, and should be rest of week. And weather in Boston, Washington & Philly can be much the same if for a few degrees up/down. Only Florida will be warmer, but even here if visiting yhe northern part of Florida is can be cool, while warm to hot in the south. And, then always the chance of rain anywhere.
Transport between NYC and Florida is available, but if booking tickets within 2/weeks of travel the fares will be very high. And, from where will you be returning to the UK?
Personally, this is all poor planning on your part waiting till last minute.
