We are traveling from WI to FL and are looking for lodging on the way down. Is it unrealistic to try 15.00-20.00/nt somewhere in say Tennessee (for a 3 star hotel)?

If you go to www.biddingfortravel.com and check the messages about TN hotels, you'll find plenty of discussion about what people have won and what they paid.

Definitely check biddingfortravel.com for info on specific areas.
Generally, I'd say it's very unrealistic to try $15-20 a night. I've seen very few places under $30-35 and those are becoming more infrequent.

You can pick up one of those interstate saver books for free at many stops along the interstates. They are filled with coupons for the chain motels along the interstate for $29 to $39. Sounds better to me than bidding on Priceline for such low price motel stays which could not be refunded if you don't make it that far in a day, or want to go further.

don't know about Tennessee specifically, but apparently Priceline has some unwritten policy of not bothering with bids below a certain amount for specific categories. The details are available on the biddingfortravel site, but it was something like $25 or $30 for a 3 star (a little lower for 1,2). I've gotten as low as $37 for a 3 star, but more typically it had been in the 45-55 range. You need to look up what prices are being offered for hotels in your category in the actual areas, on the actual days you want. Try checking individual websites (like Hilton, Radisson--the names that come up a lot as 3 star) an then you can usually start your bid at 50-60% or more below the lowest price you see. In other words, if rooms are going for $159, no way are you getting anything for $30 or $35.

You can print out those motel coupons at www.roomsaver.com before you go.
