I know this is a dumb question, but here goes. What should I pack for 10 days in Maui? What type of clothing will not make me look like a tourist? I am going to relax, snorkel, swim, run and do outside stuff. Eat out and walk in the evenings, we are a 40ish couple. I haven't traveled in ages!

My family and I were there last year and I definately overpacked. Everyone just wears shorts everywhere, even in the finest restaurants. Do pack at least one nice dress if you are going to a luau (recommended: Outrigger Wailea). Also your bathing suit of course! If you take a trip to Lahaina, you will do lots of shopping so it is best to pack light. P.S. Everyone there is a tourist anyway, so there is no getting away from that. Have a great time!

I'd bring two swimsuits, each with a compatible cover-up, a good pair of running shoes, beach sandals and dressy sandals or mules for going out. (Get a pedicure just before you go.) Two lightweight dresses or skirts for evenings, one or two pair of pants for traveling and trip to Haleakala, two or three pairs of flattering shorts. Enough tops to last ten days (or half as many and do some laundry) plus two extra tops because it's a tropical climate. An all-purpose sweater (black cardigan recommended). A casual raincoat. A really good sun hat and sunglasses.

Not much - seriously, you will want to buy clothes there anyway. Take a couple of pair of shorts (if you look OK in shorts, otherwise .... ) A couple of loose type crinkly material dresses will do fine for most everything. I'd wear slacks on the plane and some non-wrinkle top. If you stay in a condo you will probably have a washer/dryer, we always did. If you stay in a hotel .. well, just buy more clothes! Honestly, don't take much, you will see so many things there you want. Hawaii is not a dressy type place, clean and decent can take you most everyplace. We've been dozens of times (and I'd skip any luau offered, they are strictly tourist gimmicks), and always had more then enough clothes. If you go to the top of Mt. Halealaka you might (it really depends on the day) need a pair of long pants or a long sleeve top/jacket - something lightweight. Take 2 bathing suits,and VERY comfortable shoes .. if your feet hurt you will be miserable. All the stores sell really cute shifts and you can buy t-shirts by the dozen everyplace on the island. Don't worry about looking like a tourist, 99% of the people on the island look like tourists! Plenty of people who live/work on Maui wear long dresses to work/colorful Hawaiian shirts, etc. It's part of the island way of living. Just go buy one or two and blend in.

My bathing suits never dry so I would suggest bringing more bathings suits if you plan on doing a lot of water activities. I myself am planning to bring skirts, light pants such as linen pants or capris, a pair of jeans, shorts, a nice dress and a light jacket for those chilly mornings and nights. I agree that comfortable shoes is a must for casual walking as well as hikes. So you might want to bring comfy sneakers. Slippers, sandals and watershoes work well for the beach. Hat is a must because you don't want your scalp to get burnt. Happy traveling!
