we are planning a spring break to s. padre island march 18, wife and 2 daughters ages 17&21, staying at the summit condo's (family only). my wife's sister and brother in law reside in spi over the winter. we well be going into mexico for a day trip.
what can we expect on the island and traveling to mex? first time to spi for us. suggestions for things to do places to go?

If S. Padre is anything like N. Padre watch out for a billion drunk teens and twenty somethings. I used to know somebody who got run over on the beach during spring break.

It is too late to change your plans? S. Padre is not a nice beach anymore (used to be white; now it's gray due to too many oil spills, etc.) Are you going to observe the culture of wild spring breaks in person? Do you enjoy sharing the beach and restaurants with drunk teens? We've done spring breaks in LA and San Diego...perfect weather...think about it...

Hotels with all of the lobby furniture removed to prevent the drunken college kids from throwing it into the pool.

Loud music and parties going on all night.

Wet T-shirt contests on the beach.

Are you SURE this is what you want to do for a family vacation???

Another vote to reconsider your schedule, unless you are looking to do this for the 17 & 21 year old. It will be crazy with high school and college kids demonstrating the behaviors that many see as the harbinger of cultural meltdown. Otherwise, SPI beaches are the nicest in Texas (not exactly up to Polynesian standards, but not bad) and please do not think that a visit to a Mexican border town will give you a flavor of the true Mexico - they are pretty much all tourist traps.
