I fly in and out of Newark and have yet to see rocking chairs. Where are they located? I have, however, seen rocking chairs at Philadelphia airport. The area immediately around Newark isn't great and to get to NYC or even Newark takes careful planning. There is light rail service into Newark and the museum is about (I believe) a half a mile or so from the station. Given the traffic in the area and the fact that it's the holiday shopping season, I'd stay put in the airport. Newark Airport can be an absolute nightmare. Many international flights come in at the same time and if you are leaving the airport you have to go through immigration and all that stuff and the lines can be horrific. Just my two cents, but I'd stay put.

I know JC98 from her posts on the Asia board, she will be coming back from India. I also was one of the posters who responded to the question on this board several months ago about going to Liberty State Park. Getting there by public transport takes about an hour, so a taxi is really the only way to go IMO if you are going to have any time at the park. That poster was also NOT trying to make a connecting flight, they were trying to arrange to meet some friends there after landing in Newark. JC98 will be connecting, and so IMO needs to be back at Newark at least an hour before the flight, as security at EWR is just basically a pain and lines can be long. (I have also read recent threads about long wait times for luggage, so this may eat into your overall layover time also, my last trip to that airport was in July, I did not find the wait time too bad, but that was before the incidents at Heathrow and the new carry-on restrictions in the US so wait times may have increased.)
This is assuming she is able to get boarding passes and check luggage as soon as she lands and goes through Immigration and Customs, which hopefully should be the case. This is also assuming that she does not have a lot of hand luggage, as I don’t think there is any place to store luggage at all. If after doing all that, you want to try to take taxi out to see the State of Liberty, that is possible. On a clear winter day, however, views from the airport itself toward New York are very good and you might just enjoy that (and the rocking chairs....)
Finally, remember that days in early December are quite short, and it will be dusk by 4:30 pm and dark by 5 pm so plan accordingly.
The website for Liberty State Park is http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandf...s/liberty.html. You can find info on the park and using public transportation to get there if you want to at
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandf...irections.html. A cab one-way would cost about $25-30 and take about 20 minutes. I believe the Science Center is still closed, but check the website.
For info on Newark Airport, go to http://www.newarkairport.com.
I agree that I don’t think I would go to a mall on a Sunday in December. You probably won’t have any room in hand luggage anyway, and your big luggage will hopefully already be check-in.

Thanks, all, for your replies.
Thanks, Cicerone, for your detailed response! Ever so helpful! Yes, it doesn't sound feasible to do Liberty State Park then. But I'll look for the NYC skyline from the airport. Great suggestion! Thanks!

Another NJ person here who occasionally goes to Jersey Gardens, but definitely wouldn't brave it in December! Why don't you buy a one day pass to one of the airline clubs and at least you could pass the time in comfort (and with free drinks)!
