What time of day?

What time of day should we schedule a surf lesson out of Hanalei Bay? Morning or mid-day?

What time of day should we do a Helicopter Tour on Kauai? I was thinking around 1:30 so the sun would be in the valleys of Napali Coast.

Aloha Nancy!

When will you be in Kauai? I took a surf lesson in Hanalei Bay in May, I think it was around 11am. Summer beach break there is small...not sure if there is much of a difference in terms of wave size. You will be out in the water for at least an hour, vulnerable to the sun...even with sunscreen you may want to consider avoiding the peak hours if that's a problem for you. Ask the surf shop or instructor.

We took an early morning heli ride, I think around 9am. I liked the idea of starting the day with such an amazing experience (I'm a morning person anyway...) and I think early morning light is good for pictures.

Hope this helps.

Nancy, you may want to repost with a decent header. "What time of day?" says nothing regarding Kauai and many people are no doubt skipping right by it.

Hi Nancy,

I have only been to Hanalei in August. I would suspect that during the safe time of the year in Hanalei the waves are just too small for a good lesson. Not sure when you are going but I would suggest the south shores of most islands in summer.

Some of the huge valleys look best when the sun is overhead and won't be lit well by early AM or late afternoon light. Recommend an 1100-1400 window for your helo ride, IMO.
