snorkelling-Hanauma Bay or Kauai?

We are planning a trip to Oahu for 3 days and Kauai for 1 week in January. Just wondering if it is worthwhile to attempt to getto Hanauma Bay early one day or wait to snorkel at our leisure in Kauai? Travelling with 2 boys aged 11 and 7. Thanks for your advice.

You will be well rewared with making the effort to get to Hanuama Bay. We also spent a week on Kauai but would not have traded our day at Hanuama for anything. Enjoy!

By all means, go to Hanauma Bay (get there early) - even if you are going to Kauai.

Imaz, get up early (about 6 am) and get hike Diamond Head the same morning - before the crowds and heat appear (It only takes about 30 - 40 minutes) and then leave for Hananuma Bay. Be sure to get there by 8 am (We arrived at 9 am and got the last parking space). Remember to take a good underwater camera - you can see fish here without ever putting your face in the water!!! It is truly worth the trip!!

I'm not a morning person and go later usually (unless someone drags me there.) It is still nice. Although the turtles will be there around 5am. I know friends who had jobs of waking the turtles each morning before people arrive.

Okay, I guess I'll be the only dissenter here. Hanauma Bay has been so overrun with people for so long all the coral is dead and athe fish are gone. There are so many people in the water it is constantly churned up. I have been several times and have finally decided not to go back. The beach was so crowded I literally couldn't find an open spot to place my towel. Snorkel in Kauai or Maui.

Hanauma was awesome when we could feed the fish. I understand why we can't though. Still you see things there that you don't see elsewhere. Are you going far enough out or on both sides? I agree that the beach area is too packed. If you are done with the water it is time to go. Next time we go I would like to try snuba there.

What was the reason they stopped the fish feeding there?

I guess somebody ought to say something to the people selling fishfood at Black Rock.
