For the plane...anything by the Eagles. Last summer for our trip to Kauai, I bought the Rod Stewart CD of old standards. It was wonderful to sit in our condo and listen to that romantic music mingle amidst the sounds of crashing waves, falling coconuts and whistling tradewinds. Everytime I listen to that CD I think of Kauai. Jimmy Buffett is also a must for any beach vacation.

6 years ago, 4 of us friends went out to the west coast. we flew into seattle, drove down to san francisco, l.a, and then on to vegas. each of us made tapes (this is before ipods, etc...) for the week long road trip. i always liked "free fallin", tom petty, and my personal favorite, "me and bobby mcgee", janis joplin.

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World" by brother IZ instantly transports us into relaxation mode.

James Taylor's "Mexico". Of course we are usually in Mexico!

I don't usually listen to it, but I always think about the tongue-in-cheek Jimmy Buffet song, "The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful..."

I always have to listen to Life is a Highway on a road trip.

Kind of bittersweet, but...."Oh, my bags are packed; I'm ready to go...I'm leavin' on a jet plane..." Peter Paul and Mary sung it but didn't write it. Gordon Lightfoot did, i think?

Cali Nurse, "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" is a John Denver tune. I'll bet you were thinking of Gordon Lightfoot's "In the Early Morning Rain," which has a similar though darker storyline, to wit:

I'm stuck here on the ground
As cold and drunk as I can be
You can't jump a jet plane
Like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way
In the early morning rain

Lightfoot delivers a visceral and somewhat more palpable version than Denver's of the heartache of separation from loved ones.
