I am having a heck of a time finding a room in downtown Detroit for weekend of 6/23. I'm coming for Cardinals/Tigers games but I think it must be something bigger than that.

I can't seem to see a reason that everything would be booked. There's nothing listed for those dates at Cobo Hall, Joe Louis, the Fox or Hart Plaza. The Freedom Festival isn't until the 28th. Where all have you checked and will you have a car?

Are you sure it is not the Detroit Grand Prix? It is often about that time of the year.

Dream Cruise is the only summer thing I can think of that books up hotels, and that's not until August.

I think the last Grand Prix race in Detroit was 2001 or 2002.

Actually, the V98.7 Smooth Jazz festival is in Southfield that whole weekend. Could that be it?

The first race at MIS is a week before, so that's not it (not that anyone who goes to the race stays in Detroit). It's also right after the last possible date for the NBA Finals, so I doubt that's it either.

Not that it's much help to you, but I've done a little searching and found nothing. The International Arab American festival (appears pretty big) is the weekend before. The Electronic Music Festival (also big) is Memorial Day weekend. Fireworks are June 28.

I did see one reference to something about Michigan United Conservation Clubs (outdoorsmen), but I'm not certain when or where their annual convention is, or how many people, but it could have to do with that.

I also found that on June 23, 1963, thousands marched in Detroit for racial equality, but I seriously doubt they're coming back for their 43rd annual reunion.

On the plus side, it does appear by looking at sites like travel.yahoo.com and hotels.com that there is plenty of availability in Detroit suburb hotels for that weekend, so you will be able to find someplace to stay, as long as you have a car.
