If you are planning to use a cab during your next NYC trip, be aware that the cab fare is going up, including the "set" rate from JFK into the city.

From MSNBC: The Taxi & Limousine Commission on Tuesday voted to raised the base rate for stepping into a cab from $2 to $2.50, and increase the price for traveling every a fifth of a mile from 30 cents to 40 cents, beginning in May.

The commission also approved a new $1-per-passenger charge between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m

The commission also raised the flat rate for traveling to Manhattan from Kennedy Airport in Queens from $35 to $45

Also, I'm curious. Is there a flat rate for going from Manhattan to JFK or just the other way around?

Just from JFK to the city. I guess we shouldn;t complain - cabs have been so cheap for so long in New York - now they're catching up with other world capitols.

It has been some time since the cabbies have seen a fare increase.

I agree with Howard, from the way I understood it the increase is May 1.

Not really, the Airtrain still isn't running into Manhattan just yet. Only within Queens for now....

Well, The Airtrain connects with the subway at either howard Beach or Jamaica Station for a total cost of $7 each way, and it takes about 40-45 minutes which in some cases is even quicker than a cab. If you do not have a lot of luggage, the Airtrain/subway is the best way to go.
