"What Are You Always Asked to Bring to the Holiday Event?"

The travelling recipes thread is just great. So, I was wondering ...what are you asked to bring for the Holidays...doesn't have to be food, but for the sake of the previous thread that is getting so long...I will start with my always contribution to the table during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Fresh Cranberry Salad

1 pound or more fresh cranberries
2 cups sugar
1 20 oz. can crushed pineapple, drained, save juice
1 large apple
1 cup chopped pecans
juice of 1 orange
1 6 oz box cherry jello

Grind cranberries and apple. Add sugar and let stand several hours. Add drained pineapple and chopped nuts. Heat pineapple juice and orange juice. Pour over gelatin and stir until dissolved. Pour over cranberry mixture and chill.

My christmas cookies. And not only to people we're visiting - co-workers have already started to ask which day is "cookie day" this year. Sorry - 4 kinds - all secret recipes - requiring starting from one of the standards and experimenting for 8 or 10 years.

Here's something we usually have on Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings, along with our Kringle. Since I forgot to order the kringles in time for Thanksgiving this year, I'm going to try Scarlett's Baked French Toast.

Crescent Sausage Pinwheels

2 cans refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
1 lb. bulk pork sausage

Open can and flatten dough on board. For each can, spread 1/2 lb. raw sausage very thinly over surface of dough. Starting from long side, roll over and over like a newspaper. Slice sausage roll into 12 pieces. Repeat with second can. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes or until sausage is cooked and dough is browned. Makes 24 pinwheels. I usually try to use Jimmy Dean sausage, it doesn't seem to be as fat and produces less grease.

The people that invite me are so happy for my presence that nothing material is requested! ;-)

TripleSec, karaoke? Please tell me your family doesn't make y'all sing karaoke or listen to someone else?

That could be as bad as forcing someone to watch your vacation/birthing videos.

I am the homemade bread and apple pie lady.

It's amazing how many croissants and dinner rolls my family can eat! Imagine two big batches of cold-press dough chilling in my fridge the night before Thanksgiving and being turned out the next morning into enough croissants to fill a French bakery?

Ray and I also bring folding chairs, a card table and a 5-foot long folding table.

And, for good measure, we also bring along a bottle of wine.

I get asked to bring the Coconut cake or the Cheesecake recipe that my sister got from her mother-in-law.

Coconut Sour Cream Dream Cake

1 butter flavored cake mix
2 cups sugar
8 oz sour cream
12 oz frozen coconut, thawed
1 1/2 cups real whipped cream

Prepare the cake according to the directions on the box. Split both layers horizontally after they have cooled. Blend together sugar, sour cream, and coconut. Chill mixture. Spread all but 1 cup of the mixture between the four layers. Blend the remaining cup of the mixture with the real whipped cream and spread on the top and sides of the cake. Seal in airtight container and refrigerate for 3 days before serving. Keep refrigerated after cutting.

Graham Cracker Crust for Cheesecake

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
3 tablespoons sugar
1/3 cup melted butter
1 to 2 tablespoons cinnamon
1 cup pecans

Mix all ingredients. Place into springform pan. Bake at 350 for 10 min.

Cheesecake:

3 8 oz cream cheese, softened
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Topping:

2 cups sour cream
3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Mix cream cheese and sugar together in food processor until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla extract. Blend well. Pour into graham cracker crust. Bake at 350 for 40 min, or until top is slightly browned.

Combine topping ingredients. Add more sugar or vanilla to taste. Pour over top of baked cheesecake. Bake an additional 5 min at 550 (yes, 550).

Serve chilled.

GoTravel : you haven't heard me on the 'net...Nor have you heard two of my wife's cousins. Karaoke is actually a nice thing when there's talent in the room.
With enough of your booze...you, too, could take the mic
