I live in Columbia, South Carolina. I'm with the airplane pilot above. And we have a lot more trees now than we did when he wrote his response. Every time something is built it has to have trees. And the city is in the middle of a campaign to plant 10,000 more trees.

There are many "Tree City USA"s. http://www.arborday.org/programs/treeCityUSA/index.cfm
Portland Oregon has the largest city park. It has some very large Douglas Firs and many miles of trails.

I would think that Katrina wold have killed many of the trees in NO - and even before than I must admit that the downtown area was almost completely treeless. (Yes, even Manhattan seems to have more trees, since besides Central park and some other very large green areas - in residential areas all the streets are lined with mature trees and the town houses tend to have trees in both the front and backyards - and then there are the suburban parts of the citiy.)
I'm not suggesting NYC has the most trees per square mile - I would assume it is a much less urban city - but I think it has NO all beat.
I would also assume anyplace in So Cal is out - since the cities are actually located in desserts.
Agree you need to locate all of those that claim it and then check out the data.
