Whales.....Maui vs. Big Island.

We'll be on the Big Island in a couple weeks.

We've done the whale watch tour during season in Maui a few years ago and it was spectacular. Are we in for the same showing on the Big Island?

Question: How does the Maui whale viewing compare to the Big Island?

Mahalo!

I have not been to either island in a while but we did see more activity when we were on Maui vs. the Big Island. Not sure if it has to do with the location of the islands.

We travel to Kauai almost every year in April and see whales and dolphins every time.

Can't make the comparison since we were not on Maui this year, but we were on the Big Island--Feb. 13-28--and saw whales every time we were near the ocean from several parts of the island--including two who breached in Kealakekua Bay--about 2 seconds apart while we were watching. Also did a whale watch tour with Capt. Dan McSweeney (2nd time)and saw many whales including a calf, mom and escort trio that we watched for quite awhile. www.ilovewhales.com

I can't compare with Maui, but ask yourself this: when were you in Maui for the spectacular whale watching? Was it the same month of the year?

We always go to BI in Februrary and it is always great to watch the whales just sitting on the beach. I don't know how it compares to later in March.

We've been home just two weeks and I miss it so much. Have a wonderful time.

Thx for you input.

We were in Maui a month earlier than our upcoming trip to the Big Island.

Looks like we'll be prime to see both whales and that spectacular new lava flow to the ocean.

Aloha....

We were on the BI mid February, and for some reason, we just did not see as many whales as we have in the past.

For whatever reason, on Maui, we see quite a bit more, especially on the drive out to Lahaina. Very common sight to see cars parked on the side of the road.

Couple years ago, one got so close to the road, I thought it was goind to beach itself! Quite a sight.

I think Maui is better for viewing whales than Big Island. However, by the end of March most of the whales will be heading back north, and you may not see as many, even on Maui. There may still be a few, just not as plentiful as late Feb-early March. If you do take a whale watch boat tour, many will guarantee whale sightings or they will give you a certificate for a free ride next time.
